TBT Unboxing Our First Google I O Gift the Galaxy Tab Running Honeycomb

TBT Unboxing Our First Google I O Gift the Galaxy Tab Running Honeycomb

We are here at Google I/O 2016 in Mountain View, reminiscing about the fun times we have had celebrating all that is Android. We were thinking hard, remembering all of the goodies Google has given out over the years to attendees, only because it seems Google has no gifts to share with folks this year. There has been phones, tablets, Nexus Q door stops, and plenty of smartwatches. One Google I/O gift stands alone, though, and that’s the first gift we received for attending Google I/O in 2011. That is the limited edition Samsung Galaxy Tab, running Android 3.0.1 Honeycomb.

At the time, it was pretty bleeding edge Android tech, but now in 2016, it’s seen as a cheap piece of plastic and nothing too fancy. Kellen decided to do a hands-on with the device after receiving it, showing off the differences between it and the Motorola XOOM tablet. As you will see in the video, things weren’t as professional as they are these days, but it was still a blast.

Take a moment to remember that the Google Talk app was a real thing, as well as that cringeworthy Honeycomb UI. Woof.

ZTE Announces the Flagship Level Affordable Axon 7 One of the First Daydream VR Phones

ZTE Announces the Flagship Level Affordable Axon 7 One of the First Daydream VR Phones

ZTE took the wraps off its new flagship phone this morning, the Axon 7. The phone, like most ZTE phones, is being positioned as an unlocked phone with high-end specs and an affordable price. Unfortunately, ZTE isn’t ready to share specifics on the price, but they are revealing the specs, which are very much so in the incredibly high-end category.

The ZTE Axon 7 features a 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 20MP f/1.8 rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), 8MP f/2.2 front camera, 3250mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0, USB Type-C port, dual speaker setup with a dual Hi-Fi chipset (Dolby Atmos surround sound), and fingerprint reader. As for storage and RAM, ZTE is releasing two models, one with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, along with another that has 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. Each model also has a microSD slot.

See what I mean? That’s about as high-end as it gets.

Now, about that price. All ZTE will say is that there is “value” here and that the price will be lower than other flagship smartphones of today. That should mean a sub $500 price, but are you willing to get into a ZTE phone over something like the Nexus 6P to save $50 or so? I’ll let you decide on that.

As for availability, the Axon 7 hits China today and will then make its way to other markets, including the US, in the coming weeks. Once it arrives here, you will be able to buy it from zteusa.com, Amazon, Best Buy, B&H Photo, eBay, and Newegg. The Axon 7 will be available in either gold or silver.

Which carriers will it work on? Out of the box, it will for sure work on T-Mobile and AT&T, because of its GSM connectivity. However, ZTE says that it has the ability to work on both Sprint and Verizon. At this time, they aren’t guaranteeing that the phone will receive certification for use on those networks, only that it might “possibly” happen later in the year.

Along side the announcement of the Axon 7, ZTE announced that they created a VR headset to pair with it, since this phone is one of the first Google Daydream-ready devices. After looking at those specs and seeing that the Axon 7 sports a QHD AMOLED display, it makes sense that it would be ready for Google’s new VR platform.

It’s certainly a pretty phone with great specs and tons of potential. But again, can ZTE get your cash over someone like Google or HTC or even Samsung for that matter?

Winners of the First Google Play Awards Include Robinhood Houzz Alphabear

Winners of the First Google Play Awards Include Robinhood Houzz Alphabear

During an evening presentation at Google I/O last night, Google announced winners for their first ever Google Play Awards. After announcing a handful of apps for a handful of categories (like “Best use of Material Design” and “Best game”) a few weeks back, we now know who reigns supreme in the eyes of Google’s “panel of experts on the Google Play team.”

And the winners are:

  • Best app: Houzz
  • Best families app: Thinkrolls 2
  • Best game: Clash Royale
  • Best use of Material Design: Robinhood
  • Best use of Google Play Game Services: Table Tennis Touch
  • Early adopter: World Around Me
  • Go global: Pokemon Shuffle Mobile
  • Most innovative: NYT VR
  • Standout indie: Alphabear
  • Standout startup: Hopper

Big user of any of those apps? Houzz is certainly a wonderful app that probably deserves the win there. Robinhood is also a very well made app. I haven’t used many of the others, but really would have liked to have seen Alto’s Adventure snag the “best game” award.

Video Android Wear 2 0 First Look and Tour!

Video Android Wear 2 0 First Look and Tour!

During Google I/O last week, Google showed off Android Wear 2.0, the biggest update the platform has ever seen. They told us to expect it later this year on consumer devices, but did push out a developer preview to the Huawei Watch and LG Watch Urbane LTE for those interested in getting their apps ready ahead of time. It’s also available for those of us who live on the bleeding, buggy edge of all things Android. Yep, that means we flashed 2.0 to a Huawei Watch to take it for a spin.

In this build, in case you missed last week’s coverage, we get new ways to navigate Android Wear including an emphasis on using the physical button on the side of a watch as a back button instead of the swipe we are all used to. Swipes from the home screen also work differently and now launch you into the watch face chooser when done from side-to-side. The UI for notifications is no longer a card style and is instead a more fluid Material Design layout with full-screen pages. There are new ways to interact, like with a keyboard, as well.

Have a look!

LG Action CAM is World’s First Action Camera With LTE

LG Action CAM is World’s First Action Camera With LTE

LG has a new “Friend” device in its ecosystem, this time being the world’s first action camera capable of connecting to a 4G LTE network. Called the Action CAM, this camera is made for those who seek adventure, featuring a 12.3MP sensor capable of shooting at 60fps in FHD and 30fps in UHD. More notably, the LTE connectivity is not tethered by a smartphone, meaning that when you are out on the track recording your awesome motorcycle videos, they can be simultaneously streamed to YouTube Live or whichever service livestreaming is supported.

At this time, LG has not confirmed which carriers will be available at launch, but our hope is to see it available on as many US carriers as possible (no LTE bands were provided in the press release). During livestreaming, a feed of HD at 30fps is the max resolution and frame rate that the device can output, being powered by 2GB of RAM and an unknown processor. Furthermore, sometime after launch, remote access will also be available, allowing owners to set up the Action CAM as a CCTV. Whether you are on 3G or LTE, you can watch whatever your camera is capturing, perfect for monitoring your home while you are away. Lastly, the camera features an IP67 rating, which means you can go surfing with it or into your backyard pool.

LG has not yet provided an official launch date for the Action CAM. We also don’t know a price, but our guess is that it won’t be cheap. Maybe $399?

Below is the complete list of specifications.

Specifications

  • Camera: 1/2.3-inch 12.3MP / 1.55 x 1.55?pixels
  • Connectivity: LTE / 3G / Wi-Fi 802.11 b, g, n / USB Type-C 2.0 / Bluetooth 4.1
  • Video Recording: UHD 30fps / FHD 60fps / HD 120fps
  • Video Live Streaming: HD 30fps
  • Memory: 2GB RAM / 4GB ROM (OS only) / microSD (up to 2TB)
  • Size: 35 x 35 x 77.9mm
  • Weight: 95g
  • Battery: 1,400mAh
  • Others: IP67 / GPS / Accelerometer / Gyroscope
  • Color: Light Gray

Mortal Kombat X Updated for First Anniversary Brings New Characters and Blood Ruby Currency

Mortal Kombat X Updated for First Anniversary Brings New Characters and Blood Ruby Currency

Mortal Kombat X is celebrating its first anniversary on mobile, bringing new features and characters to those who still play the title. For Android and iOS, the update offers an “expanded roster,” which includes Kold War Scorpion, Kobu Jutsu Tanya, Bone Shaper Shinnok, and more. In addition, the game now offers a Blood Ruby currency in Faction Wars, which are rewarded for Leaderboard placement and for completing Battle Rating Milestones.

To really kick off the one year anniversary, the game is gifting a support card to all players, the Fujin’s Blessing card. I can’t tell you what it does, but it’s probably pretty sweet. The card can be used while attempting to complete brand new Character Challenges that have been included in the update.

Check out the one year anniversary trailer, then grab the update by following the Google Play link below.
