Which Chromebooks Will Get Google Play and Android Apps

These.

To be more specific, there are three Chromebooks that will gain access in mid-June before the rest of the field gets in on the action later this year.

Here are those first three:

FCC and FTC Want to Figure Out Why Security Updates Take so Long to Get to You

Because security is always of the utmost importance, but maybe even more so today on mobile because we all have a smartphone and use it for everything we do, the FCC wants to figure out why it’s taking carriers and manufacturers such a long time to get you updates, namely security patches. Yesterday, through a press release, the FCC announced that it is partnering with the FTC to open an inquiry into mobile device security updates. The basic idea here is that they want carriers and manufacturers to tell them their process for updating, to see what can be improved.

The announcement from the FCC name-drops Stagefright as an example, a vulnerability that really had the potential to be a disaster for many people, but has since been patched a number of times by Google. Stagefright was such a big deal during much of last year that companies like Google, Samsung, and LG all promised monthly security patches to try and protect users going forward. Unfortunately, not everyone got on board with the monthly schedule and there could be millions of vulnerable people still to date with older devices that are no longer supported by OEMs or carriers.

The FCC sent letters carriers with questions about the processes for “reviewing and releasing security updates for mobile devices.” They want to know things like, if the carrier faces issues or hurdles in releasing updates, if there are hurdles getting users to install new updates, if carriers know if updates have been installed, and if security vulnerabilities in mobile devices pose threats to their networks. They also want to know all of the parties involved in getting an update ready and pushed out, how this process works differently from one operating system to the next, and when do carriers cut off security patch support for devices.

I can’t help but applaud the FCC for probing carriers over security updates, but will say that many of them have become quite good at getting out the monthly patches that start with Google and then carry on through companies like Samsung, LG and HTC. Thankfully, the FTC says that it is going after eight phone manufacturers (Apple, Blackberry, Google, HTC, LG, Microsoft, Motorola Mobility, and Samsung) to find out similar information. That’s a good thing, because there are certainly a couple that need to get with the program.

All parties have 45 days to respond to the FCC and FTC, so it could be a while before we know anything, including findings, thoughts, and if there are going to be recommendations for improving the entire process.

Verizon Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Get Updates That Fix Google Play Issues Kill Bloatware

Verizon will begin pushing an update to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge this morning that should fix a couple of nagging bugs, while tweaking some behaviors on the side.

The updates are rolling out as version VRU4CPD2 for each and can be pulled for installation by heading into Home>Applications>Settings>About Device>Software updates. These aren’t massive updates, but you will want to grab them sooner than later.

As for what’s changing, Verizon says that the update fixes the following:

Fixes Google Play Store app update and download errors
Resolves Visual Voice Mail access issues
Google “Search” is now available in Settings menu
You can now answer video calls as just a voice call, and when you do, the call audio is routed to the earpiece by default. Video call audio will come from the speaker by default
Removed Amazon Music app
When a USB cable is plugged into the phone, the default mode automatically shows other USB options (like File Transfer)
Added “Send Premium SMS” in the Application manager settings

Need more? The update also introduces a setting that shows how much RAM is being used by apps and how much is free. To check this going forward, head into Settings>Applications>Application manager>More.

Google’s Snapseed Receives Update Brings Horizontal Flip and Last Edit Features

An update for Snapseed, Google’s photo-editing application, is bringing two new features for those who are still using the app. The two features are Apple Last Edits and Horizontal Flip. Both are pretty self explanatory, but just in case, let’s go over what they do.

Apply Last Edits allows users to apply the same edits to a newly uploaded photo that was used last on a previously saved photo. For example, if I apply a bit of HDR to a photo, then save it, that same exact edit can be done to the next photo I upload, without me having to fiddle with the HDR dial.

As for Horizontal Flip, this feature allows the user to horizontally mirror a photo. This can be used for your fudged up mirror selfies or for whichever other use you may have for flipping a photo.

A detailed changelog is listed below, as well as a link to Google Play to download the update.

What’s New

Apply Last Edits from the Main Screen. Use this feature to apply the same edits on a new photo that have been applied to the last saved photo. This feature only applies adjustments that have no local dependencies (i.e. no crop, transform or brush filters)
Horizontal flip in Straighten (y axis). Use this feature to horizontally mirror a photo, for example to fix front camera selfies which did not get mirrored correctly by the camera app.

Unlocked HTC 10 Receiving Update Brings More Camera Tweaks and System Improvements

An update for the unlocked HTC 10, labeled as 1.53.617.5, is rolling out to those in the US. While it doesn’t include Android N or anything fancy like that, it does include a few very important performance tweaks.

As listed in the changelog, users can expect an improved camera experience (seriously, the camera needs a big boost in speed), enhanced WiFi stability, as well as system stability improvements. Once updated, the overall phone should behave and perform better, which is always a good update in our book.

The update, which is available to pull right now in the US, weighs in at nearly 400MB. Get yourself on WiFi and grab it.

And Then Motorola Registered a Trademark for Moto Z

Last week, just as Google I/O was kicking off, a report surfaced suggesting that Motorola was moving on from the Moto X line of phones and instead introducing a new Moto Z line. Only adding to that idea, Motorola appears to have filed for a trademark on the day that report arrived for the name “MOTO Z.”

You can see a screenshot of the registration below, along with the owner being “Motorola Trademark Holdings.” No other details are included, other than a note about this being a trademark for “Mobile phones, smartphones and accessories therefor, namely battery chargers and adapters.”

While this doesn’t confirm a Moto Z, it certainly helps that story. Also, keep in mind that trademark filings in the past have led us to all sorts of product names ahead of time.

Twitter Makes it Official Media and Replies Using “ ” No Longer Count Towards 140 Character Limit

Earlier this month, it was reported that Twitter would soon stop counting links, photos, mentions, and other things towards your 140 character limit when composing a tweet. Twitter made these changes official this morning, hopefully bringing an end to compacting words and sentences to make them fit within the confines of 140 characters.

Once these changes take place, over the next few months according to Twitter, replies with @names and media attachments (photos, GIFs, videos, polls) will no longer count.

In addition, interactions with fellow Twitter users are also changing. Instead of using a “.@” to mention someone while also broadcasting it, a new tweet that begins with a mention can go out to all of your followers. Once tweeted, you can retweet your own tweet – also a new feature – that way all of your followers can view it. It seems somewhat complicated, but that’s what we get. In conjunction, when RT’ing your own tweet, you can opt to simply RT or Quote your tweet, giving you a few options on how to interact with your own content.

Twitter states that it is working with users and developers to roll these changes out as soon as possible in the coming months.

Google Spaces Now Available on Android and the Web

Google Spaces, the new group sharing app from Google that seems to be an app created specifically for Google I/O sessions later in the week and maybe not much more, is now live for all to use or…look at! The app can be downloaded on Android or experienced via the web in all of its Material Design glory.

I’ve been jumping around in the app for a few minutes now and am not sure that I, personally, have much use for it. These types of group sharing like apps are probably great within bigger organizations or fraternities or something, not a 2-man shop like DL. Also, if I were to use this with friends and family, well, it would be a hard sell when they already use apps like Hangouts or Google Keep. Sure, those aren’t apps aren’t designed with this same purpose, but they can be used in a group sharing sort of way.

Will you want to use it? Maybe! You’ll be able to create “spaces” for all sorts of things, add people to them, quickly add items to them through Chrome or YouTube or Photos or Search, leave comments and have a good chat about your space topics, and easily find it all later on with built-in search. It’s a slick little app worth checking out if group sharing apps were missing from your life.

AT T Confirms 45 and 60 GoPhone Prepaid Plans Get More Data This Week

Yesterday, we reported changes coming soon to AT&T’s GoPhone plans that would reward each with more data without a price hike. AT&T has now confirmed and announced the plan changes, which will arrive this Friday.

As we noted yesterday, both the $45 and $60 plans are getting more data, with the $45 plan going from 2GB to 3GB data per month, while the $60 plan is jumping from 5GB to 6GB. Again, that is all happening without a price hike.

Also, keep in mind that you can receive a $5 per month discount on each if you sign-up for autopay.

If you are already a GoPhone customer, the increase in data will attach itself to your account automatically – you don’t need to do anything to get it.

Samsung Pay Adds Reward and Membership Card Support in US

Samsung, because Google is about to have a hell of a day at I/O, dropped its own bit of news this morning related to Samsung Pay, its widely accepted mobile payment solution. Starting today, Samsung Pay now accepts users’ reward and membership cards, helping save money and accrue points all within a single payment app.

The support for rewards and membership cards lets you add everything from gym and drug store cards to those from your favorite retailers. Samsung says that you can even add insurance or personal identification cards, just for “safe keeping.”

To use rewards cards, once you have added them, you should be able to tap on one from within the app, then hover your phone (with the card up) over the store’s scanner. That’s it.

Samsung isn’t mentioning if this is limited to select retailers or gyms or drug stores, so you should be able to add almost anything. Give it a shot and let us know.

Between May 18 and May 24, customers who purchase a HTC 10 from T-Mobile will receive a free HTC Rapid Charger and Ice View case. That’s a total of $85 in free goodies.

According to T-Mobile, the Magenta-colored carrier is, “the only place to enjoy the HTC 10 with its powerful HTC BoomSound HiFi speakers and OIS on the front and rear cameras – the way they were meant to be used – unrestricted and untamed.” While this statement is completely false (you can enjoy those things no matter where you buy the HTC 10), the company cites its Music Freedom and Binge On services, which allows customers to stream music and video from select services without the used data counting towards your monthly allotment.

For pricing, you can purchase the HTC 10 for $0 down and $28.34 over 24 months ($680 FRP) on an interest-free financing option.

Again, this deal kicks off on May 18 (next Wednesday) and runs through May 24.

Twitter May Soon Stop Counting Links and Images Against Your 140 Character Limit

According to a source familiar with Twitter’s upcoming plan who spoke with Bloomberg, the company will soon stop counting links to the web and images against your 140-character tweet limit. For the longest time, Twitter has counted any added links and photos against your limit, leaving less room for actual words. In a change that could happen within the next couple of weeks, folks may soon see more words, links, and photos.

As of right now, when a link is added or a photo is embedded into a tweet, it takes up 24 characters. If multiple links are required in a tweet, that’s an additional 24 characters for each link. However, if adding multiple images (up to four), only the first 24 characters are counted and the photos are assembled into the same album with a single link.

With that being said, the process has gotten better over the years, but if Twitter does change how images and links are counted, you should begin to see more words with tweets that are accompanied by images and links.

According to Bloomberg, Twitter even contemplated lifting the character limit to 10,000, but apparently, that wasn’t seen as a good idea. Limiting a tweet’s size is one of the main reasons people flock to Twitter. Topics and headlines are easily digestible in 140 characters, so here’s hoping that the 140 character limit never vanishes.

At last, Google has posted the ATAP session from Google I/O in its entirety to YouTube, and seriously, you all need to watch it. It’s the future. During this hour-long session, the ATAP team goes over many of the projects they are working to bring to consumers, such as Project Jacquard (smart fabrics), Project Soli (mini radars that make smartwatches the shiznit), and of course, all of the details regarding Project Ara. It’s all there, delivered in a way only Google could do.

Watch it and then embrace it, for it is the not-too-distant future most likely.

Google Spaces is a New Group Sharing App With Built In Chrome Search and YouTube

To kick off Monday, Google went ahead and gave us a new app to try out, called Google Spaces. As the name sort of suggests, it’s a bit of group messaging or sharing app that revolves around specific “spaces” or topics that you’d like to discuss with friends or family or co-workers. Google is calling it a “better group sharing experience,” so again, the goal is to get you sharing information with others about topics. Did we need an app like this? I don’t know!

With Spaces, which we are still waiting to go live on Android, iOS, and Chrome, Google has built-in Search, YouTube, and Chrome to allow you to find items (like videos or web pages) to be shared and then quickly searched through to find other or older items too, perhaps mentioned topics deep in the past of a Space.

In the screenshots currently available from Google, they are suggesting spaces for topics like group trips to Paris, study sessions with fellow students, a comic book club, kitchen remodels, a space for college buddies to bro-out in, or parenting tips. It’s not a difficult idea to understand, right? You have this app for sharing topics with others who have interest in a topic.

If you are attending Google I/O, Google says to install Spaces because they plan to create a space for each I/O session so that “developers can connect with each other and Googlers around topics” at the conference.

Skype 7 0 Available for Android Redesigned UI on Tablets and Better Multitasking

Skype 7.0 is rolling out to Android users via Google Play with a ton of changes for users of the service. First thing you should notice immediately is a redesigned UI for Android tablets, bringing more of the Material Design hotness that Skype unveiled last year on smartphones. This new UI includes a floating action button (FAB), featuring quick access to new video calls, messages, and contacts.

In addition to the design changes, Skype touts an enhanced universal search feature, making it easier and quicker to find contacts, chats, groups, and Skype bots right from the main screen of the app. Multitasking is also getting an upgrade on Skype, with the new design allowing for a multi-pane view when in landscape. To enter this, simply flip your device to landscape and you will see different sections of the Skype app neatly organized.

On top of the new look and features, Skype also declares that call quality is only getting better with the latest update, saying specifically that, “Downloading the latest version means you’ll also benefit from the latest call quality and performance improvements.”

Android Pay Arrives in the UK Coming to Singapore and Australia “Soon”

This morning, only hours before Google I/O kicks off, the Android team announced that Android Pay is now available in the UK. That news might not sound surprising after the Android Twitter account jumped the gun a bit yesterday, but the news is 100% official.

Google says that currently supported banks include Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, M&S Bank, MBNA, and Nationwide Building Society. Of course, more will be added all of the time.

UK users should be able to pay at all sorts of locations, as long as they feature contact-less payment terminals. Also, be on the lookout for regular promotions from Google and some of their early partners, like Starbucks.

In related news, Google announced that Android Pay will arrive in Australia and Singapore “soon.” They didn’t share any other details, but if they are name-dropping those two specifically, I would imagine it won’t be long before users in those countries have access.

Report Samsung Pay Will Soon Move Into Online Payments too on Both Android and iOS

To help boost the amount of users making purchases through Samsung Pay, Samsung is reportedly working on an extension to the existing Samsung Pay platform that will be available to both Android and iOS devices, as well as online for desktop users. According to industry insiders, this Samsung Pay extension could launch as early as June.

To recap Samsung Pay as a whole, it is a bit different from what is offered by Google (Android Pay) and Apple (Apple Pay). As of right now, only select Galaxy device owners can use Samsung Pay in stores, and it is also limited to whichever banks support it. The list of supported banks is growing, but there are still plenty that do not. If you do have a supported bank and smartphone, users can upload banking and credit card info into Samsung Pay, then pay for goods at almost any retailer in the US, as long as there is a MS-powered credit card terminal. Samsung Pay does not entirely run off of NFC (Android Pay and Apple Pay do), so it allows users to benefit from the service in more places.

More importantly, both Apple Pay and Android Pay heavily support online payments through 3rd-party applications. This is the area where Samsung is playing catch up and this reported extension is Samsung’s investment into that online payments realm.

Think of this possible extension as a counter to PayPal online. When checking out inside of an online store, or even through a mobile app, many retailers grant the option to use PayPal for hassle-free payments. Your banking and credit card info is already stored on PayPal, which makes the payment experience much quicker. This same experience is what Samsung is reportedly going for. By offering Samsung Pay more broadly online, as well as to virtually all Android users and iPhone owners, the company can grow the amount of users exponentially.

Details regarding partners and concrete launch timeframe are unknown, but it seems that Samsung wants to launch as quickly as possible. Of course, nothing has been made official by the company yet.

Yesterday, we wrote that Pebble was teasing something new on its website with a countdown, but no one knew exactly what the countdown was counting towards. First thought to possibly be the launch of a new wearable, we now know that Pebble is back on Kickstarter, looking for $1,000,000 in funding to build a trio of new wearable devices — the Pebble 2, Pebble Time 2, and an all-new Pebble Core.

The Pebble 2 smartwatch is the same Pebble device many have come to love, but does feature a slightly updated look, along with a built-in heart rate monitor. In addition, the Pebble 2 features built-in activity tracking, water resistance, as well as the same e-paper display. According to Pebble, the Pebble 2 smartwatch should last up to 7 days on a single charge. The watch, once available, will cost $129 at retail, with shipments expected to begin in September. For those who decide to fund through Kickstarter, the Pebble 2 is priced at $99

The Pebble Time 2 features a 53% larger color display, built-in heart rate monitor, activity and sleep tracking, water resistance, and battery life for up to 10 days on a charge. The Pebble Time 2 will be priced at an intriguing $199, with shipments expected in November. If you decide to back the Time 2 on Kickstarter, though, the price is $169.

As for the Pebble Core, there are two models. One is specifically designed for runners (fitness folk), and one for “hackers.” The standard Pebble Core will be priced at $99 at launch and allows users to leave their smartphones at home while out for a run. The Core features GPS tracking, Emergency SOS protocols, syncing with 3rd-party fitness apps, Spotify music streaming, as well as 3G/Bluetooth/WiFi radios. Expected to ship in January of 2017, backers will only need to pay $69 for one, until they are sold out. For hackers, the Core features a hardware expansion port, early SDK access for app building, as well as 2 programmable buttons.

WhatsApp Intros Desktop App Available for Windows and Mac

Calling all WhatsApp users, a desktop app for the service is now available on Windows and Mac. Standalone from the web client and mobile version of WhatsApp, the desktop app behaves the exact same way as the online version does, with the exception that you don’t need your browser open. In usage, you still have all of your contacts readily available, and don’t worry, all of your conversations are still encrypted.

According to WhatsApp, the desktop app is simply an extension from your smartphone. All of the same conversations will be available. Additionally, when you send messages from the desktop, you will see them instantly pop up on your smartphone, no delay.

Because the app runs natively on your desktop, you’ll have support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more.

The desktop app is available to users on Windows 8+ and Mac OS 10.9+. Downloads are available here.
