Report LG Pay’s White Card to Feature IC Chip

Over the past few months, more details have surfaced regarding LG Pay, the company’s mobile payments platform that should launch at some point, although, there is no concrete info on when we should expect it. It was even rumored it would launch this past January, but that didn’t happen. Anyway, a new report out of Korea states that the White Card, which is the consumer-facing end to LG Pay, will feature an IC (Integrated Circuit) chip.

Anyone reading this who has a new credit card probably knows what an IC chip is, as the chips are becoming more widely adopted by financial institutions all across the world. To sum it up, IC chips help protect your credit card data from fraud and cloning, utilizing on-the-spot encryption methods. 

Not only will LG’s White Card feature the IC Chip, but will still work via the traditional MS (magnetic stripe) means. That allows the White Card to not only work at pretty much any terminal now, but any terminal that gets upgraded in the future to only work with IC chips, as they are becoming the worldwide standard for credit card payments.

As a refresher, think of White Card like a master key for your existing catalog of credit and debit cards. Once you upload all of your banking and credit card details onto White Card, you can use this single card for all of your purchasing needs, sort of like Coin used to do with the Coin 2.0 hardware.

FCC and FTC Want to Figure Out Why Security Updates Take so Long to Get to You

Because security is always of the utmost importance, but maybe even more so today on mobile because we all have a smartphone and use it for everything we do, the FCC wants to figure out why it’s taking carriers and manufacturers such a long time to get you updates, namely security patches. Yesterday, through a press release, the FCC announced that it is partnering with the FTC to open an inquiry into mobile device security updates. The basic idea here is that they want carriers and manufacturers to tell them their process for updating, to see what can be improved. 

The announcement from the FCC name-drops Stagefright as an example, a vulnerability that really had the potential to be a disaster for many people, but has since been patched a number of times by Google. Stagefright was such a big deal during much of last year that companies like Google, Samsung, and LG all promised monthly security patches to try and protect users going forward. Unfortunately, not everyone got on board with the monthly schedule and there could be millions of vulnerable people still to date with older devices that are no longer supported by OEMs or carriers.

The FCC sent letters carriers with questions about the processes for “reviewing and releasing security updates for mobile devices.” They want to know things like, if the carrier faces issues or hurdles in releasing updates, if there are hurdles getting users to install new updates, if carriers know if updates have been installed, and if security vulnerabilities in mobile devices pose threats to their networks. They also want to know all of the parties involved in getting an update ready and pushed out, how this process works differently from one operating system to the next, and when do carriers cut off security patch support for devices.

I can’t help but applaud the FCC for probing carriers over security updates, but will say that many of them have become quite good at getting out the monthly patches that start with Google and then carry on through companies like Samsung, LG and HTC. Thankfully, the FTC says that it is going after eight phone manufacturers (Apple, Blackberry, Google, HTC, LG, Microsoft, Motorola Mobility, and Samsung) to find out similar information. That’s a good thing, because there are certainly a couple that need to get with the program.

All parties have 45 days to respond to the FCC and FTC, so it could be a while before we know anything, including findings, thoughts, and if there are going to be recommendations for improving the entire process.

Continuando de onde Temporada 1 esquerda, a história continua com um mais em profundidade para os personagens, mas com a mesma narrativa humor como antes. A História gira em torno de Yoshii Akihisa, o "idiota" do título do anime. Ele entra na Academia Fumizuki, uma escola que implantou um sistema diferente para dividir seus alunos: suas classes são decididas de acordo com seu resultado em um exame realizado antes do início do ano letivo, separando-os em classes de “A” a “F”. Quanto maior for a classe, melhores serão suas instalações, portanto a classe A possui a melhor sala e a F, a pior. Durante o ano letivo, as classes podem batalhar entre si utilizando um "sistema de invocação de “seres", onde cada aluno possui um ser, cujos pontos são baseados no resultado de seu último teste. Caso os pontos do ser cheguem a zero, o aluno tem que fazer um novo exame para recuperar seus pontos. Uma batalha entre classes somente acaba quando os pontos do representante da classe chegam a zero. Uma batalha somente pode começar com a autorização de um professor. A classe que ganha a batalha fica com as instalações da perdedora (caso uma classe inferior perca de uma classe superior, os privilégios da inferior serão diminuídos e se uma inferior ganhar de um a superior suas instalações serão trocadas entre eles) No início do ano, durante o exame de qualificação, Himeji Mizuki, uma aluna promissora, desmaia e fica sem pontuação, indo para a classe 2-F. Akihisa, que estava do lado de Mizuki durante o fato, tinha esperanças de entrar em uma classe boa, mas termina com uma pontuação baixa e vai para a mesma classe 2-F, considerada a pior classe de toda a escola, principalmente pelo fato de ser formada por alguns dos mais estranhos alunos da escola. Akihisa decide então melhorar o nível da classe através de "guerras de invocação de seres", para propiciar a Mizuki melhores condições. Além de Mizuki, Akihisa contará com a ajuda do representante de classe Sakamoto Y?ji, o bish?nen Kinoshita Hideyoshi, o pervertido K?ta Tsuchiya e Shimada Minami, considerada por Akihisa como seu maior inimigo.

Google I/O hasn’t started yet, but you can bet that Google will talk about the release of a new app designed specifically for developers with apps on Google Play. It’s the Google Play Developer Console app! Yep, no more logging into the developer console via the web and attempting to manage your apps. With this app, you can do quite a bit of management of your apps from within an app. How fun. 

While I’m no developer, the screenshots and included video for the new Developer Console app show options for checking performance statistics and financial data, and to see app status, publish changes, and even read and reply to user reviews.

If you have apps on Google Play, this is probably an app you should install.

Back in late March, a report surfaced that stated Google was working on an Amazon Echo-like device. Not many details were known at the time, but really, how much info does one need? The Amazon Echo is a pretty straightforward device. You speak to it, it listens. It can play music from Amazon Prime Music, can create shopping lists for you, and even works with Nest, if you own a smart thermostat. Now, picture all of that stuff, but built by Google for use with Google’s multitude of services. 

According to sources of re/code, the device’s internal codename at Google is Chirp. Working like Google Now does on your smartphone, a user could say, “OK, Google” and the device will await your command.

We expect Chirp would do virtually everything Echo can do, such as play music from Play Music, read books aloud from Play Books, create calendar events that are synced with your Google Calendar app, and give you a breakdown of top news stories from sites you frequent. It is also reported that Chirp will look similar to an OnHub WiFi router.

Sadly, the same sources claim that Chirp is not expected to be launched during this year’s Google I/O, which takes place next week in Mountain View, CA. However, it is expected that the device will be teased on stage during the keynote, with launch set for later this year.

Brace yourselves, because you are about to see something really cool that you are going to want on your phone today, only it’s not coming today and is an iOS exclusive at the moment. Don’t ask me why, just know that Google likes to torture us and this is the latest example.

Say hello, to Gboard for iOS! 

What is Gboard? Well, you could watch the video and it’ll tell you. If you don’t have time for videos, let me try to explain. Gboard is a new keyboard for iOS that works like any keyboard when it comes to the typing part, or gesture swiping of words. Where it really shines is in this addition of a Google button in its top left corner. That Google button allows you to perform Google searches from within the keyboard and your current app, so that you can then include those Google searches in conversations, without ever leaving your current app. That make any sense?

Think of it like this. You are in Hangouts or WhatsApp or iMessage or Gmail or any other app, and you are talking to someone about a lunch spot or a new movie trailer or you want to share your upcoming flight or hotel reservation details. You can search for those items within the keyboard by tapping the Google button, and then tap on those search results to get them to appear in the conversation you are having or email you are typing.

Mind blown? Yeah, mine too.

You can also search for emoji, share GIFs, and almost any other search item that Google can come up with. And then you can include them in your conversations.

About that iOS exclusivity. Over on the Gboard listing at Product Hunt, a number of people asked Google why this wasn’t on Android and Bri Connelly, who works on “product @ Google,” said that they are “Working on the best way to bring the same functionality to Android right now!” So yeah, it may come to Android at some point! We just don’t know when that will be.

That’s Gboard and we all want it on Android yesterday.

Moto is Teasing June 9 Announcement With a Throwback to the RAZR

Moto and Lenovo are expected to show off new Moto phones on June 9 at Lenovo Tech World, one of which is rumored to be insanely thin at just 5.2mm thick. In the lead up to that event, Moto’s Twitter account has started throwing it back to previous phones of theirs that were not only very thin, but iconic.  

In the video included here, you’ll see Moto take us back to the days of the original RAZR flip phone, a phone that we probably all have fond memories of, though this isn’t the first time that Moto(rola) has leaned on the successes of the RAZR for the launch of a new phone.

Are they hinting at something here? The RAZR was indeed very thin for its time, just like the new Moto Z is supposed to be. Maybe the Z in RAZR is a hint at the Z in Moto Z too? Or maybe this is just Moto doing a #TBT on a Thursday to help us remember that this company, before it was owned by a Chinese computer company who can’t figure out what to do with it, was pretty awesome.

Report Project Chirp Google’s Amazon Echo Competitor to be Called Google Home

On the eve of Google I/O, details are emerging regarding Google’s Project Chirp. If you have missed the previous reports, Project Chirp (otherwise known simply as Chirp), is the Amazon Echo competitor device that Google is working on, said to be powered by Google Now and other Google technologies. According to the latest report from the New York Times, Chirp will be officially called Google Home, set to be unveiled during Google’s keynote address tomorrow morning in Mountain View, CA. 

Detailed in the report, Google Home will do essentially everything Echo can do, which is answer simple questions using the web, as well as possibly connect to other smart devices in your home. That’s the goal, at least. Not too many tidbits on operation were given, but considering we are potentially less than 24 hours away from unveiling, we will know everything soon enough.

According to the source of the New York Times, Google Home will not be available for purchase until this fall, but with an unveiling during Google I/O, you can expect that Google is looking to bolster app integration and support for 3rd-party systems by the time launch comes around. The Echo from Amazon has had nearly two years to build on the platform, so Google has a bit of catching up to do.

Let’s see a show of hands for who is anticipating the announcement of Google Home.

Android Apps Come to Chromebooks With Google Play Access

Google just spent a special session here at I/O, telling the press that Chrome OS and Chromebooks are gaining access to Google Play. And yep, that means Android apps running on your Chromebook. That’s….a huge announcement!

We’re getting a preview of the news right now, so stick with this page as we continue to update it.

UPDATE:  Google made the news official here.

UPDATE 2:  Google announced that Chromebooks topped Macs in sales to become the #2 PC OS for Q1 of this year. To help celebrate that news, they are bringing Google Play and Android apps to all of those devices (eventually).

It shouldn’t be difficult for developers to get their apps ready for Chromebooks. In fact, they may not have to do much, as Google says this all just runs right over the top of Chrome OS.

Google Play will start hitting the developer channel (in June) with M53 on the ASUS Chromebook Flip, Acer Chromebook R 11, and the newest Chromebook Pixel. They’ll add it to other Chromebooks too, but told us that they won’t have more details for another few months.

UPDATE 3:  You can view the full list of Chromebooks that will get Android apps here. It’s massive, in case you were wondering, and appears to include most of the modern models. The support site there only says that these will gain support “later” this year.

Google Current Smartphones Unlikely to be Supported by Daydream VR Platform

Google’s overseer of Virtual Reality, Clay Bavor, states that folks looking to get into Daydream, the Android VR platform, should hold off on upgrading their smartphone for a couple of months. For anyone who wanted to upgrade within the next few weeks, if VR is an important purchasing factor, you may want to take Bavor’s advice. According to Bavor, it is “unlikely” that many current devices, or any at all, will be “Daydream-ready” out of the box when the platform is made available to consumers later this year. 

Stated by Bavor, “I can tell you that there will most likely not be any retroactively Daydream-ready phones.” Apparently, Google’s standards for internal components to support Daydream are so high, many of the current devices on the market, such as the Galaxy S7 and HTC 10, may not make the cut. Bavor continued with, “We want to hold a very high quality bar, and for that to happen all of the components need to be just right. So, to VR fans, I would say, hold off for a few months to get your next phone… and get a Daydream-ready phone.”

Google has yet to publicly announce what exactly separates a “Daydream-ready” smartphone from an already available high-end smartphone, but the company did list a few general bullet points for what is inside a would-be Daydream device. Phones will need low-persistence displays, a high performance SoC (system on a chip), as well as a myriad of low latency and high quality sensors. Also note that a phone must be running Android N to enable the VR Mode that is required for Daydream to work properly. Even with this information available, we still don’t know the exact requirements or if any current flagship device carries them. While most current high-end devices would meet the SoC and display needs, it’s likely that the built-in sensors are not quite up to the standards Google is requiring. Right now, specifically for developers, Google lists only the Nexus 6P as a supported device for Daydream development, but Bavor did not state whether or not it would be supported once Daydream is officially available.

Alongside the announcement of Daydream, Google listed a few partners who would have Daydream-ready smartphones later in the year, including ZTE (the company announced its first Daydream-ready phone this week), Samsung, LG, HTC, and more. If getting into virtual reality is something you have been contemplating, and don’t want to wait for a Daydream-ready smartphone, you can purchase a Galaxy S7 and Gear VR headset.

Let’s see hands for who all is fine waiting until Google’s partners release their Daydream-ready phones. Anyone?

Joining a group to a beta version of an app on Android hasn’t exactly been the simplest of tasks. It typically involves finding out or knowing about a Google+ group or Google Group that hosts the beta, then clicking through a special link in that group to opt-in to testing, before moving onto Google Play to get the beta installed. See what I mean? 

Thankfully, those days of jumping through hoops to get involved in a public beta will be in the past. During Google I/O, Google announced that beta tests will become easier to find and participate in because they will start showing up in Google Play search results, assuming they are open and not in production. Through the beta listing, you will be able to opt-in and also send developers private feedback.

This new beta setup has already appeared briefly in Google Play, so it may happen more broadly within the coming days or weeks. Either way, joining beta tests should be easier than ever.

Report Samsung to Implement “Focus” Communication Hub Into Galaxy Note 6

According to the latest from SamMobile, Samsung will look to implement a feature called Samsung Focus into the Galaxy Note 6, a communication hub of sorts, similar to BlackBerry Hub. Hub is a one-stop shop for different email services, social networks and texting services, allowing users to do most of their communication via a single application. That is Samsung’s goal with Focus, reportedly.

Claimed by SamMobile, Focus will focus on email, calendar events, handle contacts, and memos. It’s possible that Focus could simply replace all of Samsung’s general applications that handle these tasks, but that seems unlikely. As an example of usage, a user could log into various social networks from Focus, such as Facebook and Twitter, and handle all of the communication from the Focus hub. In addition, you could manage different email accounts from Focus, handling all incoming and outgoing messages from the same inbox. Same could be said for instant messages and texts.

From what SamMobile has seen so far, the app appears to be designed rather well, borrowing heavily from Google’s Material Design. For consumers, that’s a good thing. Upon opening the app, your daily schedule will be listed, along with dedicated pages for contacts and memos. As previously stated, it would be your go-to app for communication and networking.

With Samsung reportedly set to launch Focus with the Galaxy Note 6, it is currently unknown if it will be brought to past Samsung devices, but it is somewhat expected to at least make it available to Galaxy S7 models.

While it’s nothing new that Samsung wants to create yet another app, if Focus might rid the Galaxy Note 6 of other Samsung apps, that would be most welcomed. Here in the US, Google provides most of its popular apps (Calendar, Messenger, etc.) on Google Play these days, so doubling up with Samsung apps is just overboard.
