AT T Includes New North America Roaming Benefits for Select Plans

AT T Includes New North America Roaming Benefits for Select Plans

In what might be considered a humorous and topical usage of a metaphor, AT&T wants to “break down wireless walls” between the US and its neighbors to the north and south. To clarify, right in time for any summer traveling, AT&T is bundling a Mexico roaming feature into its existing Mobile Share Value plans of 15GB and higher. With this plan, customers receive unlimited calling, texting, and use of their data in and between Mexico and the US. This roaming feature will start being included in the Mobile Share Value plans on May 20.

Furthermore, any new or existing AT&T customer on an Unlimited Plan will have unlimited talk, text, and data in both Mexico and Canada. This change also takes place on May 20. AT&T Unlimited Plan customers will need to separately add the AT&T Roam North America feature to each smartphone and the Roam North America Data feature to each tablet.

For those interested in these upgraded plans, note that AT&T is adding the benefit free of charge. However, to activate the change, customers will need to do so via AT&T’s online portal, in a retail location, or via the myAT&T application on your mobile device.

Business customers on a Mobile Share Value plan of 15GB or higher can get the new features, too. Those who activate on a new Mobile Select plan priced $20/month or higher will automatically receive Mexico roaming benefits.

These changes begin May 20, so if you plan on dipping into Cabo, or snowmobiling your way up to Canada this summer, mark it on your calendar.

Google’s Gboard is an Awesome New Keyboard for iOS That’s Probably Coming to Android

Google’s Gboard is an Awesome New Keyboard for iOS That’s Probably Coming to Android

Brace yourselves, because you are about to see something really cool that you are going to want on your phone today, only it’s not coming today and is an iOS exclusive at the moment. Don’t ask me why, just know that Google likes to torture us and this is the latest example.

Say hello, to Gboard for iOS

What is Gboard? Well, you could watch the video and it’ll tell you. If you don’t have time for videos, let me try to explain. Gboard is a new keyboard for iOS that works like any keyboard when it comes to the typing part, or gesture swiping of words. Where it really shines is in this addition of a Google button in its top left corner. That Google button allows you to perform Google searches from within the keyboard and your current app, so that you can then include those Google searches in conversations, without ever leaving your current app. That make any sense?

Think of it like this. You are in Hangouts or WhatsApp or iMessage or Gmail or any other app, and you are talking to someone about a lunch spot or a new movie trailer or you want to share your upcoming flight or hotel reservation details. You can search for those items within the keyboard by tapping the Google button, and then tap on those search results to get them to appear in the conversation you are having or email you are typing.

gboard_gif_regularSearch

Mind blown? Yeah, mine too.

You can also search for emoji, share GIFs, and almost any other search item that Google can come up with. And then you can include them in your conversations.

About that iOS exclusivity. Over on the Gboard listing at Product Hunt, a number of people asked Google why this wasn’t on Android and Bri Connelly, who works on “product @ Google,” said that they are “Working on the best way to bring the same functionality to Android right now!” So yeah, it may come to Android at some point! We just don’t know when that will be.

That’s Gboard and we all want it on Android yesterday.

Instagram Gets New Icon Simpler Layout in Latest Update

Instagram Gets New Icon Simpler Layout in Latest Update

Instagram’s non-flat, retro camera icon that seems about six years beyond its prime, has been replaced this morning by a new app icon and a refreshed design. That’s right, we have a new Instagram icon!

The new icon is an updated take on the original icon, only in rainbow gradient form. Honestly, it’s pretty bad! But hey, I’m no designer and I think (Maybe. Hopefully. Please do me right.) I’ll be able to live with whatever most icon designs interpret this as through their own creations. (Stock?) Rainbow gradient, folks, rainbow gradient.

As for the app refresh, the UI elements are now mostly black and white, likely as a way to put the focus on your colorful photos. We saw this UI in testing on a handful of devices over the past couple of weeks, but it’s now official as the Instagram layout. There are also smaller buttons along the bottom of the app for navigating, again, to get you fully immersed in the app and photos. The location of UI elements all remain the same, though.

Video Quick Look at Google’s New Gboard Keyboard for iOS

Video Quick Look at Google’s New Gboard Keyboard for iOS

Google released an iOS-only app today called Gboard, a keyboard replacement that does one thing no other keyboard currently does – put the power of Google Search inside of every single app. To say that we are a bit jealous of iOS users right now would probably be an understatement, because this idea of having Google inside of a keyboard is brilliant. Sure, the app or feature will more than likely come to Android at some point, but we don’t know when. For now, this is another case of iOS users having all the fun.

Since I still happen to have an iPhone 6 lying around these parts, I decided to take Gboard for a spin and share with you the beauty of such a feature. Not to put an additional downer on your day, but yeah, it’s pretty awesome.

In the video below, you’ll see how easily you can share restaurant info, sports scores, funny new YouTube videos, definitions of words, and of course, all the fire emoji one can handle.

Check it out.

DEAL Brand New Nexus 5 at Woot Today for 149 99

DEAL Brand New Nexus 5 at Woot Today for 149 99

Google’s Nexus 5, a phone so loved they re-created it in modern form as the Nexus 5X, can be purchased today at Woot.com for a ridiculously low price of $149.99. The best part? These are brand new Nexus 5s. I don’t know how that’s possible, but I’m not about to complain about a 2.5-year old darling of a phone available to fans or those in dire need of an affordable, yet still awesome phone, in new condition.

The listing says that this is the D820 model, which is the North America variant that works perfectly on AT&T or T-Mobile or a variant of GSM prepaid outfits. This phone will not work on Sprint or Verizon.

As a reminder, this phone is still (for now) being supported by Google and runs the latest version of Android Marshmallow.

Better hurry!

Cheers Matthew!

Google Spaces is a New Group Sharing App With Built In Chrome Search and YouTube

Google Spaces is a New Group Sharing App With Built In Chrome Search and YouTube

To kick off Monday, Google went ahead and gave us a new app to try out, called Google Spaces. As the name sort of suggests, it’s a bit of group messaging or sharing app that revolves around specific “spaces” or topics that you’d like to discuss with friends or family or co-workers. Google is calling it a “better group sharing experience,” so again, the goal is to get you sharing information with others about topics. Did we need an app like this? I don’t know!

With Spaces, which we are still waiting to go live on Android, iOS, and Chrome, Google has built-in Search, YouTube, and Chrome to allow you to find items (like videos or web pages) to be shared and then quickly searched through to find other or older items too, perhaps mentioned topics deep in the past of a Space.

In the screenshots currently available from Google, they are suggesting spaces for topics like group trips to Paris, study sessions with fellow students, a comic book club, kitchen remodels, a space for college buddies to bro-out in, or parenting tips. It’s not a difficult idea to understand, right? You have this app for sharing topics with others who have interest in a topic.

google spaces1

google spaces2

If you are attending Google I/O, Google says to install Spaces because they plan to create a space for each I/O session so that “developers can connect with each other and Googlers around topics” at the conference.

Once Spaces goes live, we’ll be sure to share those direct links to Android and iOS. For now, feel free to cruise around the Chrome landing page and preview some of the fun.

Report Moto X Line to be Replaced by New Moto Z Phones

Report Moto X Line to be Replaced by New Moto Z Phones

According to a report out of Venturebeat, the Moto X line may have been unceremoniously retired by Lenovo in favor of a new Moto line dubbed Moto Z. This news comes on the heels of Lenovo announcing new Moto G phones that may show up later this summer in the US and just before Lenovo shows off new Moto products at its Tech World conference in early June.

Today’s report claims that unpublished marketing materials have revealed the new branding, which also might shift the DROID line at Verizon into Moto Z branding. Let’s talk about what we are being told today.

The Moto X line is dead and the Moto Z line is taking over. The two Motorola phones under codenames Vector Thin and Vertex, whose details were leaked last week, will arrive publicly as the Moto Z Style and Moto Z Play, respectively. Those names certainly match up to last year’s Moto X Pure Edition, which was more widely presented as Moto X Style outside of the US. Its counterpart, as you may recall, was the Moto X Play.

As for the DROID line, Verizon and Moto may end up ditching the Turbo and MAXX lines in favor of this Moto Z branding, only they’ll be dubbed “DROID Edition.” So we could have a Moto Z Style “DROID Edition” and Moto Z Play “DROID Edition.” That’s ridiculous, but then again, these are DROID phones we’re talking about.

Finally, we have additional information on the modular aspect to all of these phones. According to today’s report, the individual modules may end up being sold as MotoMods instead of Amps, which was previously rumored.

So much re-branding. I hope you know what you are doing, Lenovo.

Here’s What’s New in Android N as of Google I O

Curious as to what’s all new in Android N as of today? As has been the case the past couple of years, Google tossed up a slide during the I/O keynote with new features in the shape of the newest version of Android to give us a good look.

Sure, a lot of this stuff we already knew about thanks to two developer previews before today’s release, but it’s still nice to see it all in one place.

See anything extra interesting?

The Smartphone Industry Needs to Take New Chances Like Motorola and LG are Doing With Modules

The Smartphone Industry Needs to Take New Chances Like Motorola and LG are Doing With Modules

With Motorola on the verge of announcing its newest phone fit with modular capabilities and LG having just come off a an opening month or two where it introduced its take on a modular phone, I think it’s clear that smartphone makers have realized that in order to survive going forward, they need to do something new. It’s time to innovate again. It’s time to take chances, offer more value in new ways, make phones more than just phones, and move beyond the simple, slab smartphone that just gets the basics right. The smartphone world needs something new, something fresh. The last thing it needs are a bunch of devices that the average consumer can’t tell apart but seem to fit a tech media narrative of what they view as success or good.

Many of your favorite smartphone makers, outside of Samsung, are struggling and have been for years. Since the early gold rush to Android supremacy four and five years ago, the industry has matured, maybe even plateaued, and made it extremely difficult for anyone to succeed. Companies like Samsung and Apple are still doing quite well as they established dominance long ago and haven’t given it up, partially because they have massive marketing budgets, but also because they keep making great products that mean something to owners of them. For companies like Motorola and LG, they can’t compete with that reputation or marketing budget by just doing the same old thing. And that right there is why I’m glad that they are both taking chances by going this modular route.

Think about this for a second. In the past three years, Motorola has made phones that we gave what amounts to as a “phone of the year” award twice, plus included them in the top 3 phones of the year in another. You know why we did that? Because Motorola was making phones that were simple, took it all back to the basics, and just did almost everything right. And how did that work out for Motorola? Well, they sold enough phones to miss out on every single smartphone marketshare chart, were sold off by Google for failing, and are now a part of Lenovo, who has already admitted that they aren’t meeting expectations. In other words, that approach was a colossal failure. Should they really just keep on doing the same old thing?

htc 10 review

Look at HTC this year. The HTC 10 is a phone that I think most would agree is a really good phone. HTC fixed problems from the past, by using a better camera, lengthening battery life, building beauty into hardware, and taking their Android skin down to the studs to leave a cleaner approach. But does anyone think that the HTC 10 is going to save HTC or bring them “back” as so many in the media have proclaimed? God no. They are a VR company now that makes phones on the side. They don’t hold press events for their phones anymore, they fill every private event they can with Vive demos and not phones, and are in the middle of the slowest product category exit I’ve ever seen (Yes, I’m talking about phones.).

But are modular phones the answer? Do any of us really care about adding on JBL speakers and high-end camera attachments to expand the capabilities of a phone? I don’t know that yet because no one has done it in a way to convince me that I do. At least someone is trying to convince me, though. At least someone is trying to show me that there might be something more to a phone than just the simple things. Because as we have all witnessed in recent years, those things aren’t getting it done for all but two companies. I don’t know about you guys, but I’d like to have choice in the future and for other companies to succeed and for someone to push Samsung and Apple into being better.

The thing with modules is that they have the potential to add value on top of your initial purchase. Obviously, we need companies to use those brilliant minds of theirs to come up with those ideas, but if they can, this is an area that could, in theory, succeed. Even something as simple as slapping on a battery module to the back of my phone to top it off mid-day and relieve myself of a charger is innovation. Maybe I want a kickstand on my phone right now, with bigger speakers as I watch a movie, but don’t want that added bulk in an hour. Maybe, I want to take better-than-smartphone pictures and will deal with the bulk of a camera add-on for an hour during a photo shoot before tucking it back in a back pocket. Maybe, just maybe, I want a secondary display to constantly show me information in a way that won’t drain battery or change the appearance of my phone to match an outfit today or check my blood-sugar levels. Phone expansion makes a lot of sense if it’s done right, if it adds that value, and if there is an ecosystem in place to foster continued innovation.

moto z motomods modules

With LG and the G5, they tried to go modular and probably failed. They failed, though, because their take on a modular phone doesn’t exactly work the way it needs to because they insisted on keeping that silly removable battery. You can’t ask someone to turn their phone off every time they want to adjust it – we don’t like inconveniences. They also failed because they failed to create a module line-up worth considering. If there is a takeway from the G5, it’s that we can only hope LG is learning and will get it all right with the G6, next year.

Can Motorola do it right today? All signs so far point to Motorola at least getting it closer-to-right with the upcoming Moto Z. None of the details are official, but Moto and Lenovo appear to have adopted modules that slap or “snap” across the entire backside of the phone, connect via pins, and could potentially be swapped on or off with ease. They also reportedly have created a decent-sized ecosystem of modules that will be ready for launch, unlike LG.

But again, that’s all not really the point. The point here is that for everyone involved (both companies and consumers), the chances being taken by Motorola and LG today could pay off in the long run. They could mean better, more advanced phones whose capabilities can expand and create more value for you and I, which could turn into more sales and success for them. Besides just doing the basics well, which almost every phone already does well today, we could get more.

Think about 2012 and the original Galaxy Note for a second. Remember how many in the media thought it would be a failure because it was too big with its 5.3-inch display (!), that it was awkward to make calls on, yet also couldn’t replace a tablet? As it turns out, Samsung has sold millions upon millions of the Note franchise, which will soon hit its 6th model, and ushered in an era of bigger phones that we haven’t moved away from. You could argue that Samsung’s Galaxy S line is their bread and butter, but by taking a chance on the Note line, Samsung changed the game.

That’s why I’m glad to see Motorola and LG take chances on modular phones. We don’t know if they’ll be successful with these first versions or if modules will be a thing in five years, but if they don’t try, where does that leave us? We could be stuck with what we have now, with a bunch of really good phones from manufacturers who are struggling to survive and can’t stand out, even by doing the basics right. Or, we could get the next Galaxy Note.

Mortal Kombat X Updated for First Anniversary Brings New Characters and Blood Ruby Currency

Mortal Kombat X Updated for First Anniversary Brings New Characters and Blood Ruby Currency

Mortal Kombat X is celebrating its first anniversary on mobile, bringing new features and characters to those who still play the title. For Android and iOS, the update offers an “expanded roster,” which includes Kold War Scorpion, Kobu Jutsu Tanya, Bone Shaper Shinnok, and more. In addition, the game now offers a Blood Ruby currency in Faction Wars, which are rewarded for Leaderboard placement and for completing Battle Rating Milestones.

To really kick off the one year anniversary, the game is gifting a support card to all players, the Fujin’s Blessing card. I can’t tell you what it does, but it’s probably pretty sweet. The card can be used while attempting to complete brand new Character Challenges that have been included in the update.

Check out the one year anniversary trailer, then grab the update by following the Google Play link below.

Google Introduces Messaging App Allo New Video Chat App Duo

Google Introduces Messaging App Allo New Video Chat App Duo

In an announcement no one saw coming today at Google I/O, Google went ahead and unveiled two new apps, one for messaging and another for video chatting. The apps are called Allo and Duo, respectively.

Unfortunately, Google was just previewing the apps today and hasn’t made them available, but they did talk plenty about them. This is what you need to know.

Allo

Allo is an app that Google is calling a “smart” messaging app that is tied to your phone number (sort of like WhatsApp). Because it’s tied to your phone number, hopefully it becomes easier for you to convince other people to use it, since it will also just be tied to their phone number. Or as Google puts it, this idea lets you easily get in touch with the people in your phonebook (and probably send them an invite to use Allo).

With Allo, you get a mostly standard messaging client, but it tries to learn from you over time to show suggestions that allow you to have conversations without typing. It learns if you are a “haha” or “lol” person, can suggest responses based off of photos being shared (yep, it does photos too), and brings the power of the new Google Assistant.

1-Expressiveness_animation_v4-GIF_abbrev

By using Google Assistant, Allo brings you Google inside of your app (Think the iOS-only Gboard but better!). That means you can chat with the new Assistant and get things done without leaving your chat app. You can book dinner reservations, edit photos, get sports scores, play games, use Search/Maps/YouTube/Translate, check your calendar, see flight information, photos from your last trip, and more. You can ask the assistant (by typing @google) if your flight is delayed or what the weather is like, find soccer highlights, etc., all within Allo.

You can even setup an incognito conversation to allow Allo to encrypt your chat.

Pretty sweet, right?

Duo

As for Duo, this is Google’s new one-on-one video chatting app that is supposedly really fast. Google says that this should work flawlessly across both slow and fast connections, which means you can video chat at all times if you want, from anywhere.

The app has a Knock Knock feature that shows you who is calling on video before you answer, displays video chats in 720p (HD), and sports end-to-end encryption.

Both apps are now live on Google Play for pre-registration. As I mentioned earlier, they won’t be available until “this summer.”
