Here are Some Moto Z Modules Plus a Fresh Moto Z DROID Edition Look

Here are Some Moto Z Modules Plus a Fresh Moto Z DROID Edition Look

In just under two weeks, Lenovo is going to unveil the next Moto phone, a phone we are fully expecting to be called the Moto Z at this point. Previous reports have suggested that it will attempt the modular thing with back plates, called MotoMods, that may be much more user-friendly and flexible in terms of potential than what LG tried with the G5. We may also see that same Moto Z phone as a DROID Edition, though there is no certainty that it will show up an Lenovo Tech World on June 9.

This morning (well, last night to be exact), we are getting a fresh look at the Moto Z in DROID Edition form, along with a first look at three of the MotoMod modules.

In the image above, we can see “DROID” branding on the camera housing, which is really the only differentiator from this phone and the standard Moto Z. Well, there is always a chance that the DROID Edition will get exclusive colorways (like these heavily gold plated models), but the shape and size, along with the rear pin placements for MotoMod connecting appear to be identical.

A previous report suggested that Lenovo would simplify their line this year, by just branding the flagship Moto Z as a DROID Edition, instead of pushing out the Moto Z and then creating an all new phone (like previous DROID Turbo devices) to be sold at Verizon under the DROID name. This is yet more evidence of that happening.

But what about those MotoMod modules. Well, here are three of them.

moto z motomods modules

From what I can tell, we have (front-right) a camera module with a massive lens, shutter button and control, and flash. In the middle, that looks to me like a thicker battery pack module with kickstand. In the far back, it’s really tough to tell, but that could just be a slimmer battery pack, though there does seem to be some extra fun baked in there. Is that a button? What is that line down the middle for? (Any thoughts?)

In case you were wondering, yes these apply right onto the back of the phone. The idea here is that the ultra thin body of the Moto Z can be expanded upon by slapping or snapping these modules across the entire back. A current or magnet of some sort will hold these MotoMod modules in place through the sets of pins seen on the back. This could make for quickly swappable modules and might actually be a great implementation.

And I can’t believe I’m admitting this, but damn, this phone is growing on me.

And Then Motorola Registered a Trademark for Moto Z

And Then Motorola Registered a Trademark for Moto Z

Last week, just as Google I/O was kicking off, a report surfaced suggesting that Motorola was moving on from the Moto X line of phones and instead introducing a new Moto Z line. Only adding to that idea, Motorola appears to have filed for a trademark on the day that report arrived for the name “MOTO Z.”

You can see a screenshot of the registration below, along with the owner being “Motorola Trademark Holdings.” No other details are included, other than a note about this being a trademark for “Mobile phones, smartphones and accessories therefor, namely battery chargers and adapters.”

While this doesn’t confirm a Moto Z, it certainly helps that story. Also, keep in mind that trademark filings in the past have led us to all sorts of product names ahead of time.

Moto is Teasing June 9 Announcement With a Throwback to the RAZR

Moto is Teasing June 9 Announcement With a Throwback to the RAZR

Moto and Lenovo are expected to show off new Moto phones on June 9 at Lenovo Tech World, one of which is rumored to be insanely thin at just 5.2mm thick. In the lead up to that event, Moto’s Twitter account has started throwing it back to previous phones of theirs that were not only very thin, but iconic.

In the video included here, you’ll see Moto take us back to the days of the original RAZR flip phone, a phone that we probably all have fond memories of, though this isn’t the first time that Moto(rola) has leaned on the successes of the RAZR for the launch of a new phone.

Are they hinting at something here? The RAZR was indeed very thin for its time, just like the new Moto Z is supposed to be. Maybe the Z in RAZR is a hint at the Z in Moto Z too? Or maybe this is just Moto doing a #TBT on a Thursday to help us remember that this company, before it was owned by a Chinese computer company who can’t figure out what to do with it, was pretty awesome.

Thoughts?

Cheers Felipe and Marco!

Moto G 4th Gen Hits FCC Looking Ready for the US

Moto G 4th Gen Hits FCC Looking Ready for the US

Lenovo and Moto are expected to officially announce new a new Moto G phone tomorrow in India, likely called the Moto G (4th Gen). We aren’t sure why they are specifically targeting India for the launch while ignoring the rest of the world, but it does appear that the new Moto G will show up here eventually, if not right away. According to listings for new Motorola phones that hit the FCC at the end of last week, we indeed show a couple of model numbers with full US connectivity on AT&T and T-Mobile that have long-been attached to this new Moto G.

At least four new Moto phones are listed at the FCC from Thursday and Friday, with model numbers including XT1620, XT1621, XT1622, XT1624, XT1640, XT1641, XT1642, and XT1643. The two we care about are XT1620 and XT1640, both of which show carrier support here in the US. All of those other models are quite limited in terms of connectivity, but the XT1620 and XT1640 models have all the right GSM support, along with LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 7, 12, and 17.

Here is the general info chart from the FCC for those two models:

Screen Shot 2016-05-16 at 7.25.40 AM

What’s a bit odd is the fact that the FCC listings all show an XT1620 numbers with an XT1640 number together, along with a single set of device dimensions. For months now, there has been talk of a Moto G (4th gen) and a Moto G Plus (4th gen), which one would think would mean smaller and bigger versions. That may not be the case, though, and we may just see lower and higher end versions with the “Plus” moniker differentiating the two.

Screen Shot 2016-05-16 at 7.18.56 AM

The most recent set of rumors pegs the Moto G Plus (4th gen) as having a Snapdragon 617 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, 16MP camera, 5.5-inch FHD (1080p) display, and a fingerprint sensor. The regular Moto G (4th gen) should have the same size, but slightly lesser specs, like a Snapdragon 400-range processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, 13MP camera, and no fingerprint sensor.

Also, that new image at the top is from @evleaks, who referred to this as the “little bro” to another version of the Moto G.

Excited for the new Moto G?

WATCH Moto G 4th Gen Unveiling Live Stream! 2 30AM Pacific 5 30AM Eastern

At 2:30AM Pacific (5:30AM Eastern), Motorola will unveil new products during an event in India, products that we assume will include at least one Moto G (4th gen) variant. While there is no guarantee that tonight’s event is for the Moto G, Moto’s India arm has been teasing a phone for weeks upon weeks now with a mostly cheesy Twitter campaign based around the hashtag #MissingOut that hypes a phone with a better camera, battery life, performance, and security. Is it the new Moto G? I can’t imagine what else it would be.

For some reason, Moto has decided to make a big deal about the upcoming Moto G (4th gen) in India alone while ignoring the rest of the world that cares about the Moto G line. We are fully expecting the new Moto G to be sold here (and elsewhere) after it’s made official, thanks to an FCC listing that shows a model primed for our GSM networks, but it feels like we are missing out on the splashy launch of the next version of Moto’s most successful of all time. Maybe that’s Moto’s intent.

Either way, the fun happens tonight and we’ll be ready to share it all with you once Moto gives us the goods.

To learn the latest on the Moto G (4th gen) saga, hit up this post from earlier.

Moto G4 Moto G4 Plus and Moto G4 Play All Announced Coming Soon to North America

Moto G4 Moto G4 Plus and Moto G4 Play All Announced Coming Soon to North America

Moto and Lenovo unwrapped a new Moto G family this morning in India and Brazil, a family that includes three phones, not two. Please welcome in the Moto G4, Moto G4 Plus, and Moto G4 Play, three phones that should match up to the world’s “unique” people who all “use their phones differently.”

The Moto G4 (or Moto G 4th gen) sports a 5.5-inch Full HD display (1080p), 13MP camera, 3000mAh battery, Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB or 32GB internal storage with SD support, and charges quickly when needed with TurboPower. Like previous generations, this new Moto G also has interchangeable shells, so that you can customize the look and make it yours.

The Moto G4 Plus is the exact same phone as the Moto G4, only with a handful of addition features that might make it slightly more appealing. You still have the 5.5-inch FHD display and 3000mAh battery with Turbo charging, but Moto also tossed in a 16MP camera with laser and phase detect autofocus. Moto used DxOMark to either test or optimize their camera, so DxOMark says that this camera is among the best and tops the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. And finally, the Moto G4 Plus has a fingerprint reader as well, but can be found with 64GB internal storage and 4GB RAM, along with the 2GB version.

On the lower end, we have the Moto G4 Play, a phone with a “reliable” Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 5-inch 720p display, and 2800mAh battery. Motorola’s press release isn’t saying, but my guess is that this is more like a new Moto E than a true Moto G.

You can find full Moto G4 specs here.

The Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus arrive in Brazil starting today, while the Moto G Plus, by itself, hits India. Moto says to expect both of these phones to show up in North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific before long. The Moto G Play arrives this summer.

UPDATE: Motorola is now saying to not expect the Moto G4 or Moto G4 Plus until “mid-Summer.”

Report Moto X Line to be Replaced by New Moto Z Phones

Report Moto X Line to be Replaced by New Moto Z Phones

According to a report out of Venturebeat, the Moto X line may have been unceremoniously retired by Lenovo in favor of a new Moto line dubbed Moto Z. This news comes on the heels of Lenovo announcing new Moto G phones that may show up later this summer in the US and just before Lenovo shows off new Moto products at its Tech World conference in early June.

Today’s report claims that unpublished marketing materials have revealed the new branding, which also might shift the DROID line at Verizon into Moto Z branding. Let’s talk about what we are being told today.

The Moto X line is dead and the Moto Z line is taking over. The two Motorola phones under codenames Vector Thin and Vertex, whose details were leaked last week, will arrive publicly as the Moto Z Style and Moto Z Play, respectively. Those names certainly match up to last year’s Moto X Pure Edition, which was more widely presented as Moto X Style outside of the US. Its counterpart, as you may recall, was the Moto X Play.

As for the DROID line, Verizon and Moto may end up ditching the Turbo and MAXX lines in favor of this Moto Z branding, only they’ll be dubbed “DROID Edition.” So we could have a Moto Z Style “DROID Edition” and Moto Z Play “DROID Edition.” That’s ridiculous, but then again, these are DROID phones we’re talking about.

Finally, we have additional information on the modular aspect to all of these phones. According to today’s report, the individual modules may end up being sold as MotoMods instead of Amps, which was previously rumored.

So much re-branding. I hope you know what you are doing, Lenovo.
