AT T Includes New North America Roaming Benefits for Select Plans

In what might be considered a humorous and topical usage of a metaphor, AT&T wants to “break down wireless walls” between the US and its neighbors to the north and south. To clarify, right in time for any summer traveling, AT&T is bundling a Mexico roaming feature into its existing Mobile Share Value plans of 15GB and higher. With this plan, customers receive unlimited calling, texting, and use of their data in and between Mexico and the US. This roaming feature will start being included in the Mobile Share Value plans on May 20.

Furthermore, any new or existing AT&T customer on an Unlimited Plan will have unlimited talk, text, and data in both Mexico and Canada. This change also takes place on May 20. AT&T Unlimited Plan customers will need to separately add the AT&T Roam North America feature to each smartphone and the Roam North America Data feature to each tablet.

For those interested in these upgraded plans, note that AT&T is adding the benefit free of charge. However, to activate the change, customers will need to do so via AT&T’s online portal, in a retail location, or via the myAT&T application on your mobile device.

Business customers on a Mobile Share Value plan of 15GB or higher can get the new features, too. Those who activate on a new Mobile Select plan priced $20/month or higher will automatically receive Mexico roaming benefits.

These changes begin May 20, so if you plan on dipping into Cabo, or snowmobiling your way up to Canada this summer, mark it on your calendar.

Bank of America Announces Android Pay Support for Withdrawing Cash at ATMs

During one of Google I/O’s many Android Pay sessions, Bank of America took the stage to announce that they are now supporting Google’s mobile payment service at their cardless ATMs. That means you can use Android Pay, assuming it is loaded up with your Bank of America card, to withdraw cash.

BofA says that they expect to expand the cardless technology to 5,000 ATMs by the end of the year, but not before they push out an initial 2,400 across the country. They also will equip the “majority” of ATMs in the San Francisco Bay and Silicon Valley areas with the technology.

But not only can you withdraw cash using Android Pay and your phone, you can check balances and make transfers as well. All of this is a first for any bank in the US.

Bank Expands Cardless ATM Technology to 5,000 ATMs Nationwide in 2016
SAN FRANCISCO – At the Google IO conference in Mountain View today, Michelle Moore, Head of Digital Banking at Bank of America, was on stage with Pali Bhat, Senior Director of Android Pay to demonstrate that the Bank of America cardless ATM technology now supports Android Pay. The bank also announced plans to expand cardless technology to 5,000 ATMs by year-end starting this month with a roll out to 2,400 ATMs across the country, including the majority of ATMs in the San Francisco Bay and Silicon Valley areas.
Bank of America becomes the first bank to begin a broad roll out of the technology, which lets customers withdraw cash, make transfers and check balances using a digital wallet stored on their smartphones. Earlier this year, the bank rolled out the feature to select ATMs in Boston, Charlotte, New York City, San Francisco and Silicon Valley.
“Consumers are increasingly using their mobile devices to manage their daily lives, and we’re committed to delivering solutions that give them convenient and secure options when it comes to managing their money,” said Moore. “Now in addition to using digital wallets for purchases, customers can use them to get cash at the ATM.”
Cardless ATMs allow customers to access most features of Bank of America’s ATMs. Customers can identify cardless-enabled ATMs by the contactless symbol near the card reader. When ready to perform a transaction, the customer will select their Bank of America debit card in their digital wallet and hold their device over the ATM’s contactless card reader to activate the ATM. Then they follow the normal process to enter their PIN, select their account and initiate a withdrawal, transfer, or balance inquiry.
The cardless ATMs support mobile wallets that are enabled with near field communications and loaded with a Bank of America debit card.
Cardless ATMs are one more example of the ongoing shift to mobile. Twenty million Bank of America customers now actively use the bank’s mobile banking app. During the first quarter of 2016, the number of new Bank of America accounts opened through mobile increased by 50 percent year-over-year.

Moto G4 Moto G4 Plus and Moto G4 Play All Announced Coming Soon to North America

Moto and Lenovo unwrapped a new Moto G family this morning in India and Brazil, a family that includes three phones, not two. Please welcome in the Moto G4, Moto G4 Plus, and Moto G4 Play, three phones that should match up to the world’s “unique” people who all “use their phones differently.”

The Moto G4 (or Moto G 4th gen) sports a 5.5-inch Full HD display (1080p), 13MP camera, 3000mAh battery, Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB or 32GB internal storage with SD support, and charges quickly when needed with TurboPower. Like previous generations, this new Moto G also has interchangeable shells, so that you can customize the look and make it yours.

The Moto G4 Plus is the exact same phone as the Moto G4, only with a handful of addition features that might make it slightly more appealing. You still have the 5.5-inch FHD display and 3000mAh battery with Turbo charging, but Moto also tossed in a 16MP camera with laser and phase detect autofocus. Moto used DxOMark to either test or optimize their camera, so DxOMark says that this camera is among the best and tops the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. And finally, the Moto G4 Plus has a fingerprint reader as well, but can be found with 64GB internal storage and 4GB RAM, along with the 2GB version.

On the lower end, we have the Moto G4 Play, a phone with a “reliable” Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 5-inch 720p display, and 2800mAh battery. Motorola’s press release isn’t saying, but my guess is that this is more like a new Moto E than a true Moto G.

The Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus arrive in Brazil starting today, while the Moto G Plus, by itself, hits India. Moto says to expect both of these phones to show up in North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific before long. The Moto G Play arrives this summer.

UPDATE: Motorola is now saying to not expect the Moto G4 or Moto G4 Plus until “mid-Summer.”
