DEAL Brand New Nexus 5 at Woot Today for 149 99

Google’s Nexus 5, a phone so loved they re-created it in modern form as the Nexus 5X, can be purchased today at Woot.com for a ridiculously low price of $149.99. The best part? These are brand new Nexus 5s. I don’t know how that’s possible, but I’m not about to complain about a 2.5-year old darling of a phone available to fans or those in dire need of an affordable, yet still awesome phone, in new condition.

The listing says that this is the D820 model, which is the North America variant that works perfectly on AT&T or T-Mobile or a variant of GSM prepaid outfits. This phone will not work on Sprint or Verizon. 

As a reminder, this phone is still (for now) being supported by Google and runs the latest version of Android Marshmallow.

Google Begins Posting OTA Images for Nexus Devices the Zip Files

You know how we often spend days hunting down the over-the-air (OTA) .zip files for Nexus updates to try and get you updates faster than Google sends them? We may not need to do that any longer because Google started posting the files today. I’m not kidding – the .zip OTA files are now up on the Google Developers site, right next to the factory images. 

Google includes instructions for flashing these .zip files, which include using a bit of adb and the “adb sideload” command. We also have instructions for it here.

At this time, they are only populating the page with recent update files (Android 6.0.1) for the Pixel C, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9, and Nexus Player.

Pretty sweet, though, right?

RIP Nexus Player

The Nexus Player, Google’s original Android TV set-top box, is now gone from the Google Store and has been sold out (or removed) at most retailers for months. Yes, the end has come to the low-spec’d little media streamer and we may not miss it, outside of its low price. 

It was a decent initial entry to the Android TV platform for the price, especially with included remote, but it always lacked the power needed to run most apps or games and was certainly a “jank” list topper. This device truly was a Nexus, in that it was nothing more than a showcase for what could be possible with Android TV, rather than the best-of-the-best that all should try to beat.

One has to wonder if a new Nexus Player will show in place of the now-retired Nexus offering, or if Google will let third party manufacturers take it from here. After all, the SHIELD Android TV from NVIDIA is about as top tier as it gets for a media streaming box, but we also have options on the way from companies like Xiaomi that will certainly be worth a look.

Jeff Koons Nexus Live Cases are Now Available for 40 and Here’s How to Make a Balloon Swan

The Jeff Koons designed Nexus Live Cases that Google began teasing yesterday are now available for purchase on the Google Store. Priced at $40, you will find three different limited edition cases, all of which are individually numbered.

Not familiar with Jeff Koons? I know nothing of him either, but Google calls him “one of the world’s greatest living artists” who is best known for his “Gazing Ball” series, where he re-creates previous masterpiece paintings and then places a large blue gazing ball in front of them. He also does public sculptures and created a special live wallpaper for these cases that is built from Koons’ favorite moments from the Swan Lake ballet. 

The three cases are called Diana, Mailbox, and Bust, include the NFC button on the back like other Live Cases, feature that live wallpaper I just mentioned of the Swan Lake ballet, and will allow you to receive “exclusive digital artwork created by the artist and sent directly to your phone.”
