Ultimate Chicken Horse Available for NVIDIA SHIELD Priced at 10

Get ready for a party, as the official launch of Ultimate Chicken Horse has commenced on Google Play for the NVIDIA SHIELD. Designed as a party game, with the title supporting up to 4 players at once, the goal is to reach the end of a level without getting destroyed by various in-level obstacles. The twist is, you design the levels.

If a level is made too easy, points are not distributed. However, if your level features plenty of saws, arrows, and other deadly devices, you score many points. Be the first to cross the finish line without taking too much damage and you win. 

The game combines fun mechanics, such as wall jumping and bouncing, with an easy-to-master set of controls. So easy that anyone can get in on the action. Additionally, the game has an upbeat soundtrack, sure to get the blood flowing while you attempt to dodge arrows. Currently, there are 9 different levels to play with, but more are sure to come. Even with just the 9 levels, though, there are countless amounts of blocks to customize levels with. At this time, the only thing truly lacking is online multiplayer. We don’t know if that is coming, but it would be a huge plus.

Priced at $9.99 on Google Play, the game is definitely fun if you have multiple SHIELD Controllers, and a few friends. Even if you only have one extra controller and your significant other, you will still have plenty of fun. Worst case scenario, if you don’t have a SHIELD, don’t worry, we may be cooking something up with NVIDIA to help you with that.

TBT Instagram Now Available for Android iOS Users Lose Their Sh t

Back in April of 2012, big things happened. The walled city of Instagram was no longer exclusive to those with an iPhone, and let me tell you, existing citizens of that city were not too happy. In fact, many folks took to social media to decry Instagram’s support of Android. One comment posted to Twitter reads, “Instagram is now available for Android phones. Now I’m going to be forced to see what poor people eat for dinner.”

Interestingly enough, at the exact same time, many Android users didn’t understand the hype surrounding the release. Even on this site, one reader said, “I don’t care about lame, overused, and utterly useless photo filters.” Oh, good sir, Instagram is so much more than just photo filters, and only 4 years later are we really seeing how big Instagram has become. Remember, Facebook thought Instagram was worth $1 billion back in 2012, and only a couple of years later in 2014, Citigroup valued Instagram at $35 billion. Now, in 2016, the service only seems to keep growing and adding new features. Pretty good for a service that only lets you add filters to photos and share them, right?

Let’s take a moment to reflect on a few of the comments made when the app launched for Android.

Anyone wanna bet on how many of these people rock an Android phone now? Statistically speaking, at least a few of them probably do.

As the years have passed, I’d say iOS users have become a bit friendlier towards Android users on Instagram, especially since Android isn’t known as the budget-friendly, shitty camera quality OS anymore. We have expensive phones, too, you know!

Oh, and did I mention, Droid Life is on Instagram? Yeah, you best go follow!

Google Spaces Now Available on Android and the Web

Google Spaces, the new group sharing app from Google that seems to be an app created specifically for Google I/O sessions later in the week and maybe not much more, is now live for all to use or…look at! The app can be downloaded on Android or experienced via the web in all of its Material Design glory.

I’ve been jumping around in the app for a few minutes now and am not sure that I, personally, have much use for it. These types of group sharing like apps are probably great within bigger organizations or fraternities or something, not a 2-man shop like DL. Also, if I were to use this with friends and family, well, it would be a hard sell when they already use apps like Hangouts or Google Keep. Sure, those aren’t apps aren’t designed with this same purpose, but they can be used in a group sharing sort of way. 

Will you want to use it? Maybe! You’ll be able to create “spaces” for all sorts of things, add people to them, quickly add items to them through Chrome or YouTube or Photos or Search, leave comments and have a good chat about your space topics, and easily find it all later on with built-in search. It’s a slick little app worth checking out if group sharing apps were missing from your life.

Android N Preview 3 Gets Semi Stable “Beta” Release Available Now

The massive Google I/O 2016 keynote just wrapped and that means it’s time to start talking about what’s new. Since you are all obsessed with new versions of Android, we thought we should first start with the fact that Android N Developer Preview 3 is now available. Google is also saying that this version should be stable enough for you to use on a daily device. That’s huge news! 

The update is rolling out as version NPD35K and is already popping up on devices who are a part of the Android Beta program. In fact, during the show, I was able to pull the update onto my Nexus 6. So if you are enrolled, be sure to check in Settings>About.

This new version includes Android VR, along with a sustained performance mode and a bunch of other behind-the-scenes items. The full release notes can be found here.

Skype 7 0 Available for Android Redesigned UI on Tablets and Better Multitasking

Skype 7.0 is rolling out to Android users via Google Play with a ton of changes for users of the service. First thing you should notice immediately is a redesigned UI for Android tablets, bringing more of the Material Design hotness that Skype unveiled last year on smartphones. This new UI includes a floating action button (FAB), featuring quick access to new video calls, messages, and contacts. 

In addition to the design changes, Skype touts an enhanced universal search feature, making it easier and quicker to find contacts, chats, groups, and Skype bots right from the main screen of the app. Multitasking is also getting an upgrade on Skype, with the new design allowing for a multi-pane view when in landscape. To enter this, simply flip your device to landscape and you will see different sections of the Skype app neatly organized.

On top of the new look and features, Skype also declares that call quality is only getting better with the latest update, saying specifically that, “Downloading the latest version means you’ll also benefit from the latest call quality and performance improvements.”

For those of you who bought the LG G5 hoping for a modular world of bliss, but have been disappointed at the lack of availability, know that today may change things a bit. LG announced this morning that the “Friends” line-up for the G5 is now available directly from LG.com in the US. 

Instead of having to hunt down a carrier with stock or a retailer, you can buy items like the CAM Plus, 360 VR, and 360 CAM from LG. You’ll also find their new TONE Platinum headsets at the Friends store, but you aren’t going to find the G5’s HiFi DAC anywhere. Remember, LG decided that it wasn’t worth selling in the US, which means you really only have access to one module on your supposedly modular phone, the CAM Plus. The future.

WhatsApp Intros Desktop App Available for Windows and Mac

Calling all WhatsApp users, a desktop app for the service is now available on Windows and Mac. Standalone from the web client and mobile version of WhatsApp, the desktop app behaves the exact same way as the online version does, with the exception that you don’t need your browser open. In usage, you still have all of your contacts readily available, and don’t worry, all of your conversations are still encrypted. 

According to WhatsApp, the desktop app is simply an extension from your smartphone. All of the same conversations will be available. Additionally, when you send messages from the desktop, you will see them instantly pop up on your smartphone, no delay.

Because the app runs natively on your desktop, you’ll have support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more.

The desktop app is available to users on Windows 8+ and Mac OS 10.9+. Downloads are available here.

Google’s Awesome Tap to Translate Available Inside 3rd Party Applications

Thanks to an update for Google Translate, translating text from within 3rd-party applications just became a total breeze. Instead of copying and pasting the foreign text into the standalone Translate app, simply “Tap to Translate,” directly from within whichever app you are using. For example, if you are texting with someone in WhatsApp and they are speaking German, you can tap the Translate icon inside of the WhatsApp settings to translate the text. You can then even translate your own words and reply to them in German. The GIF image above details this process. 

This feature works for all of Google’s 103 supported languages, and even better, you don’t need a data connection to use it. If you know that you will be using a particular language frequently, you can download a language package for offline use. Previously, these language packages were massive, but with Google working a bit of magic, they were able to shrink the packages by 90 percent. That means they won’t crowd up your valuable onboard storage. And yes, audio is available for all of your translations, just as it is in the official Translate app.

For those in need, the Translate app is also receiving Word Lens in Chinese. Supporting both simplified and traditional Chinese, Word Lens allows the user to translate signs from a given language to and from English. With Word Lens in Chinese, Google states it is supported on menus, signs, packages, or other printed text.

Google Home is Official Powered by Google Assistant Available Later This Year

During the keynote of Google I/O this morning, Google Home was made official. Set to be a real competitor to the Amazon Echo, Google Home is powered by Google Assistant, the new AI-based software that helps users complete tasks.

Much like Echo, a user will speak to Google Home, which will get it to relay information from the web, playback music thanks to a built-in speaker, tracks your packages, make and change dining reservations, and even go over calendar events you have linked to your Google account.

Additionally, Google Home can be linked to other smart features in your home, such as speakers, HDTVs, thermostats, and more.

Google has opened up a sign-up of sorts, which is really just an email list to be informed of when Home is available. You can sign-up here. At this time, Google has not provided an official release date or pricing.

Jeff Koons Nexus Live Cases are Now Available for 40 and Here’s How to Make a Balloon Swan

The Jeff Koons designed Nexus Live Cases that Google began teasing yesterday are now available for purchase on the Google Store. Priced at $40, you will find three different limited edition cases, all of which are individually numbered.

Not familiar with Jeff Koons? I know nothing of him either, but Google calls him “one of the world’s greatest living artists” who is best known for his “Gazing Ball” series, where he re-creates previous masterpiece paintings and then places a large blue gazing ball in front of them. He also does public sculptures and created a special live wallpaper for these cases that is built from Koons’ favorite moments from the Swan Lake ballet. 

The three cases are called Diana, Mailbox, and Bust, include the NFC button on the back like other Live Cases, feature that live wallpaper I just mentioned of the Swan Lake ballet, and will allow you to receive “exclusive digital artwork created by the artist and sent directly to your phone.”
