Google Releases Google Play Developer Console App to Help With App Management

Google Releases Google Play Developer Console App to Help With App Management

Google I/O hasn’t started yet, but you can bet that Google will talk about the release of a new app designed specifically for developers with apps on Google Play. It’s the Google Play Developer Console app! Yep, no more logging into the developer console via the web and attempting to manage your apps. With this app, you can do quite a bit of management of your apps from within an app. How fun.

While I’m no developer, the screenshots and included video for the new Developer Console app show options for checking performance statistics and financial data, and to see app status, publish changes, and even read and reply to user reviews.

If you have apps on Google Play, this is probably an app you should install.

Dark Sky Weather App Arrives on Android With a Subscription Model That Few are Happy About

Dark Sky Weather App Arrives on Android With a Subscription Model That Few are Happy About

Dark Sky launched on Android this week to the delight of weather obsessed former iOS users who made their way to the intelligent side of mobile. While the app isn’t exactly a beacon of Material Design newness, it’s very much like its Apple-originated counterpart and should be familiar to fans. With that said, the pricing model isn’t like it is on iOS and is rubbing Android users the wrong way.

The weather app, like the popular iOS version, includes down-to-the-minute “hyperlocal” rain forecasts, the advanced notifications, and “accurate” 24-hour and 7-day forecasts. It has the beautiful maps too. It’s very much built to be like the iOS version, only now for Android too, which the team behind it says has always been the number one request. Oh, there are widgets as well, because this is Android, dammit, and we love widgets.

So what’s up with the pricing that is irritating our Android brethren? On iOS, you can buy Dark Sky with a one-time payment of $3.99. That payment gets you full access to the app, with those timely notifications and the other benefits that make Dark Sky such a good app. On Android, Dark Sky has decided to conduct an “experiment.” Mmmm, experiments almost always mean something you won’t like, right?

The experiment is to offer a free version of Dark Sky that acts like a standard weather app you could download in 100 different places from 100 different developers. To unlock the good features (like the notifications, alerts, minute-by-minute forecasts, and widgets), you’ll need to pay a yearly $2.99 subscription. See the problem here for Android users?

According to the early reviews of Dark Sky, people aren’t exactly happy about having to keep paying $2.99 per year for access to the same app and services that iOS users get to pay a one-time $3.99 fee for. Seriously, go take a look at the reviews. As of right now, 1-star reviews are dominating the listing and almost all reference the pricing model or “experiment.”

dark sky android reviews

Of course, I have some thoughts on this idea. In Dark Sky’s blog post to announce the arrival on Android, they make mention of finally being able to create an Android app because they grew their resources to the point where they can do it “right” and also continue to support it going forward. In other words, this is probably a small outfit who doesn’t have a couple of hundred million in the bank and 100 employees to make their weather app always awesome. In order to survive and continue to support both iOS and Android, and add new features, getting paid going forward on a continual basis is probably crucial.

Now, I know that people hate this idea of having to continually pay for something when we have all been trained to pay for apps once, own them for life, and expect forever and ever support and new features. Honestly, that may not be fair or sustainable to a lot of developers. You may recall Action Launcher creator Chris Lacy charging everyone again for Action Launcher 3 and people freaking out a bit. He stood by his decision because like many of you, the dude needs to feed his family and providing a lifetime worth of updates and new features on an app that isn’t producing new money is probably not a reality.

Does it suck that the Android app is different from the iOS version in terms of how you pay for it? Yeah, I get that. But maybe we all need to think about how our favorite apps can continue to receive support and the idea that a one-off payment isn’t going to cut in any longer. I don’t know the company structure or size of Dark Sky, so this isn’t me sticking up for their “experiment,” this is just a conversation over all paid apps that we probably need to start talking about.

And now my morning chat with myself is over, feel free to check out Dark Sky.

YouTube App Being Rebuilt for Daydream Google’s VR Platform

YouTube App Being Rebuilt for Daydream Google’s VR Platform

As announced during yesterday morning’s keynote, Google is rebuilding its YouTube app, making it more enjoyable for those who plan on using the service with virtual reality. The announcement goes hand-in-hand with the unveiling of Daydream, the company’s VR platform for Android devices.

Once the changes are live and Daydream is available to consumers, a revamped UI will be seen, just like the own shown in the header image above. Explained by YouTube, the goal is provide an, “easier, more immersive way to find and experience virtual reality content on YouTube.”

The YouTube app will still feature the things you know and enjoy, such as voice search, easy discovery, as well as your playlists of videos. Once live, it will all just be tweaked to better work inside of a VR headset. Naturally, if you aren’t using VR, the YouTube UI won’t be changing.

YouTube claims they have been working with many creators to have a ton of VR and 360-degree video content available at the time of Daydream’s launch. Additionally, YouTube is collaborating with the NBA, BuzzFeed, and Tastemade to deliver all new experiences to VR users.

Like everything else from Google I/O this year, expect to try it for yourself later this year in Q3.

Google Spaces is a New Group Sharing App With Built In Chrome Search and YouTube

Google Spaces is a New Group Sharing App With Built In Chrome Search and YouTube

To kick off Monday, Google went ahead and gave us a new app to try out, called Google Spaces. As the name sort of suggests, it’s a bit of group messaging or sharing app that revolves around specific “spaces” or topics that you’d like to discuss with friends or family or co-workers. Google is calling it a “better group sharing experience,” so again, the goal is to get you sharing information with others about topics. Did we need an app like this? I don’t know!

With Spaces, which we are still waiting to go live on Android, iOS, and Chrome, Google has built-in Search, YouTube, and Chrome to allow you to find items (like videos or web pages) to be shared and then quickly searched through to find other or older items too, perhaps mentioned topics deep in the past of a Space.

In the screenshots currently available from Google, they are suggesting spaces for topics like group trips to Paris, study sessions with fellow students, a comic book club, kitchen remodels, a space for college buddies to bro-out in, or parenting tips. It’s not a difficult idea to understand, right? You have this app for sharing topics with others who have interest in a topic.

google spaces2

If you are attending Google I/O, Google says to install Spaces because they plan to create a space for each I/O session so that “developers can connect with each other and Googlers around topics” at the conference.

Once Spaces goes live, we’ll be sure to share those direct links to Android and iOS. For now, feel free to cruise around the Chrome landing page and preview some of the fun.

WhatsApp Intros Desktop App Available for Windows and Mac

WhatsApp Intros Desktop App Available for Windows and Mac

Calling all WhatsApp users, a desktop app for the service is now available on Windows and Mac. Standalone from the web client and mobile version of WhatsApp, the desktop app behaves the exact same way as the online version does, with the exception that you don’t need your browser open. In usage, you still have all of your contacts readily available, and don’t worry, all of your conversations are still encrypted.

According to WhatsApp, the desktop app is simply an extension from your smartphone. All of the same conversations will be available. Additionally, when you send messages from the desktop, you will see them instantly pop up on your smartphone, no delay.

Because the app runs natively on your desktop, you’ll have support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more.

The desktop app is available to users on Windows 8+ and Mac OS 10.9+. Downloads are available here.

Sunrise the Calendar App I Already Miss Dearly Shuts Down August 31

Sunrise the Calendar App I Already Miss Dearly Shuts Down August 31

Yeah, I know, that was the perfect opportunity to toss out some lame sun setting joke, but I spared you. Instead, just know this – Sunrise, the really, really good calendar app that Microsoft bought back in 2015 before deciding to kill it off in an attempt to sucker you into using its Outlook app (which I understand is a solid app, but do not care because its existence means the death of Sunrise), will fully shutdown on August 31 and completely stop working.

The Sunrise team, which is probably awesome even as Microsoft employees, penned a blog post today to talk about the end. It’s heartfelt, but ultimately talks about bringing Sunrise’s life to a close because they aren’t supporting it at all anymore. That includes not providing bug fixes. Rather than abandon Sunrise and turn your beautiful memories of it into terrible, “YOU SHOULD UPDATE THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE” ratings on Google Play, it’s best to just let it go.

I probably won’t ever let Microsoft live this down and will complain about it every time another calendar app comes out, but you should let it go.

Goodbye, dear friend, Sunrise.

Starz App Updated to Support Android TV

Starz App Updated to Support Android TV

The Starz app, available on Google Play, has been updated to support Android TV devices. This support includes set-top boxes, like the NVIDIA SHIELD and Nexus Player, as well as HDTV sets that have Android TV baked in. Based on a subscription model, like many other channels, users pay $8.99/month for access to Starz’s programming, which includes Outlander, The Girlfriend Experience, and Power.

With a subscription, up to four viewers can watch content simultaneously, as well as download titles for offline viewing. However, if a user already pays for Starz via their cable TV provider, simply use your existing credentials to log into the Starz application for easy access. For anyone subscribed to the Starz sister sites, Starz Encore or MoviePlex, use the official Starz app for the one-stop shop streaming experience.

The newly added Android TV support is available in the latest update, downloadable now on Google Play. As a programming note, you can expect to see a few posts like this over the week, thanks to Google I/O taking place.

WatchESPN Streaming Hits Android TV Through ESPN App

WatchESPN Streaming Hits Android TV Through ESPN App

Those interested in shooting balls through hoops, shooting pucks into nets, hitting balls over fences, kicking balls into nets, or watching James Harden reinvent the pratfall, access to WatchESPN has been added to the official ESPN application for Android TV. To watch the action, users will need the ESPN app installed, available on all Android TV models, and will also come shipped on all new Nexus Players, according to ESPN.

Bundled into the new offering, ESPN will also provide access to short-form video clips, as well as ESPN Classic on-demand content for streaming. As stated by ESPN, “Delivering our content seamlessly within this app-like user interface on Android TV embraces a growing trend in consumer behavior and consumption habits.”

To have access to all of the videos, a user will need a paid TV subscription from pretty much any cable provider in the US. That also includes satellite TV. If you pay for TV at home, it’s likely that you have ESPN, so to use the ESPN app, simply log into your TV account via the ESPN app and then you are all set for sports watching.

How about them OKC Thunder, yeah?

Google Introduces Messaging App Allo New Video Chat App Duo

Google Introduces Messaging App Allo New Video Chat App Duo

In an announcement no one saw coming today at Google I/O, Google went ahead and unveiled two new apps, one for messaging and another for video chatting. The apps are called Allo and Duo, respectively.

Unfortunately, Google was just previewing the apps today and hasn’t made them available, but they did talk plenty about them. This is what you need to know.

Allo

Allo is an app that Google is calling a “smart” messaging app that is tied to your phone number (sort of like WhatsApp). Because it’s tied to your phone number, hopefully it becomes easier for you to convince other people to use it, since it will also just be tied to their phone number. Or as Google puts it, this idea lets you easily get in touch with the people in your phonebook (and probably send them an invite to use Allo).

With Allo, you get a mostly standard messaging client, but it tries to learn from you over time to show suggestions that allow you to have conversations without typing. It learns if you are a “haha” or “lol” person, can suggest responses based off of photos being shared (yep, it does photos too), and brings the power of the new Google Assistant.

1-Expressiveness_animation_v4-GIF_abbrev

By using Google Assistant, Allo brings you Google inside of your app (Think the iOS-only Gboard but better!). That means you can chat with the new Assistant and get things done without leaving your chat app. You can book dinner reservations, edit photos, get sports scores, play games, use Search/Maps/YouTube/Translate, check your calendar, see flight information, photos from your last trip, and more. You can ask the assistant (by typing @google) if your flight is delayed or what the weather is like, find soccer highlights, etc., all within Allo.

You can even setup an incognito conversation to allow Allo to encrypt your chat.

Pretty sweet, right?

Duo

As for Duo, this is Google’s new one-on-one video chatting app that is supposedly really fast. Google says that this should work flawlessly across both slow and fast connections, which means you can video chat at all times if you want, from anywhere.

The app has a Knock Knock feature that shows you who is calling on video before you answer, displays video chats in 720p (HD), and sports end-to-end encryption.

Both apps are now live on Google Play for pre-registration. As I mentioned earlier, they won’t be available until “this summer.”
