Verizon Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Get Updates That Fix Google Play Issues Kill Bloatware

Verizon Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Get Updates That Fix Google Play Issues Kill Bloatware

Verizon will begin pushing an update to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge this morning that should fix a couple of nagging bugs, while tweaking some behaviors on the side.

The updates are rolling out as version VRU4CPD2 for each and can be pulled for installation by heading into Home>Applications>Settings>About Device>Software updates. These aren’t massive updates, but you will want to grab them sooner than later.

As for what’s changing, Verizon says that the update fixes the following:

  • Fixes Google Play Store app update and download errors
  • Resolves Visual Voice Mail access issues
  • Google “Search” is now available in Settings menu
  • You can now answer video calls as just a voice call, and when you do, the call audio is routed to the earpiece by default. Video call audio will come from the speaker by default
  • Removed Amazon Music app
  • When a USB cable is plugged into the phone, the default mode automatically shows other USB options (like File Transfer)
  • Added “Send Premium SMS” in the Application manager settings

Need more? The update also introduces a setting that shows how much RAM is being used by apps and how much is free. To check this going forward, head into Settings>Applications>Application manager>More.

Let us know if that update is live yet!

Unlocked HTC 10 Now Working on Verizon But There are Prerequisites

Unlocked HTC 10 Now Working on Verizon But There are Prerequisites

We have attempted to throw an active Verizon SIM into the unlocked model of the HTC 10, but it doesn’t work. This really shouldn’t shock anyone, even though the device features the necessary radios to run on Big Red’s network. However, with S-OFF and root achieved for the HTC 10, the good folks at XDA have released a fix for this issue, meaning anyone with an unlocked HTC 10 can now get their device working on Verizon. After all, in our opinion, this is truly what unlocked should mean.

In order to begin this process, you will need S-OFF and root on your HTC 10. To do so, look over the instructions here. Before you get started, though, please note that attempting these types of actions can cause your device to behave unexpectedly. If you feel comfortable doing this, proceed. As a refresher, S-OFF equates to security off, which allows HTC device owners to modify any partition on the device, and changes will not be reset once a reboot takes place. When a device is S-ON, changes are not permanent. For a deeper understanding of S-ON and S-OFF, read this.

Now, it is stated in the instructions that you will need S-OFF and keep S-OFF during your usage of this radio. If that works for you, then really, all that is needed is a single flash of a radio.img via adb. The file is available on XDA from the via link below. For those of you with experience in adb and flashing files, this process will be extremely straightforward. Once the flash is completed, you will select the “CDMA/EvDOGSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto” option from within the secret radio menu. This menu is accessed by inputting *#*#4636#*#* into your dialer and dialing.

At this time, advanced calling features are not yet available, but according to the team behind this, they can later be added once available for the device.

If you happen to have an unlocked HTC, and want it to work on Verizon’s LTE, this is your chance.

Verizon HTC 10 Getting Update Tomorrow With Camera Improvements

Verizon HTC 10 Getting Update Tomorrow With Camera Improvements

Own an HTC 10 from Verizon? Cool! You get an update tomorrow! And you get an update tomorrow! And you too, get an update tomorrow!

According to HTC’s Mo Versi, they “have the approval for the MR update that includes camera improvements and additional fixes.” That means they somehow already worked through Verizon’s 8-month (that might be an exaggeration) update testing approval process and are now ready to give you the goods. The goods being a better HTC 10 camera experience.

For what it’s worth, Verizon concurs – you should expect an update tomorrow. This page will be live at some point with additional details.

Verizon Makes 6GB for 60 Prepaid Plan Permanent Adds Unlimited Calling to Mexico and Canada

Verizon Makes 6GB for 60 Prepaid Plan Permanent Adds Unlimited Calling to Mexico and Canada

Back in February, Verizon announced a promotion for its prepaid line that bumped up data in two plans without the prices moving. Today, Verizon tells us that those numbers (both price and data) will become permanent on May 15, plus they will add in unlimited calling to Mexico and Canada on one of them.

Going forward (at least for the time being), Verizon’s prepaid plans include a $30 WiFi only option (includes unlimited talk and text), along with $45 and $60 plans that offer 2GB or 5GB of data, respectively. Through those last two options, if you sign-up for autopay, Verizon will kick in another 1GB of data per month at no extra cost. So at $45, with autopay, you could have 3GB of high-speed data per month, or at $60, with autopay, you could have 6GB of high-speed data per month.

On top of the bonus data, all three of Verizon’s prepaid plans include unlimited text to Mexico and Canada. Starting May 15, the $60 plan will also get unlimited calling to Mexico and Canada at no extra charge.

So you’ll see headlines today suggesting that Verizon is now giving you more data at no extra cost and that their prepaid plans are changing, but that’s not actually true. They started these two plans with these prices and data buckets back in February and are now making the pricing and data permanent, while adding unlimited calling to Canada and Mexico on the $60 plan.

Make sense?
