Rumor Roundup OnePlus 3

We have yet to receive an official unveiling date for the OnePlus 3 from OnePlus, but recently, Carl Pei, CEO of OnePlus, stated we should expect release before the end of Q2. For 2016, the last day of Q2 is June 30, so we must be getting close. Over the course of the past couple of weeks, many apparent leaks and rumors have been swirling around, and before OnePlus makes anything official, we wanted to update you on what we should expect from the company in 2016.

The leaks have focused on specifications we can expect to see inside of the device, photos showing off its design, and much more. If you are at all interested in this year’s OnePlus device, take a look.

Specs

Thanks to reported benchmarks posted online, we have a pretty good understanding of where this device (possibly devices) will sit alongside other flagship phones. Inside, it is expected that the OnePlus 3 will feature a Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM, although, a more “premium” model of the device is rumored to feature 6GB of RAM. The display is reported to be 5? in size, with a resolution of 1080p (FHD). Other specifications include a 16MP rear-facing camera, 8MP front-facing camera, USB Type-C port, 32GB of onboard storage (64GB for the premium model), fingerprint reader on the front chin, and OxygenOS running atop Android 6.0.1.

Software

At this time, not many details have been leaked concerning OnePlus’ proprietary software changes, but it’s safe to assume we can expect more of the same customization options that were baked into the OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X. Additionally, it is also unknown if the OnePlus 3 will feature NFC (Near Field Communication), which was sort of a big deal with the OnePlus 2. With mobile payments becoming pretty much the norm across many parts of the world, it would be foolish of OnePlus to leave NFC off of its upcoming flagship device.

Charging

According to a leak out of OPPO, the OnePlus 3 is also reported to feature an extremely fast charging feature, which would get the phone from 0% to 100% battery in just 15 minutes. Known as VOOC Charging, it is said to be 5x faster than conventional smartphone charging methods. At MWC, OPPO did showcase this technology, but it was used on a 2,500mAh battery. It is reported that the OnePlus 3 will feature a 3,500mAh battery.

Price

As for pricing, the latest intel suggests that the premium OnePlus 3 (6GB RAM, 64GB storage) will cost around $400, while the 4GB RAM and 32GB of storage model will be about $310. As always, OnePlus has made its devices very competitive in the pricing department. We should expect the same in 2016.

As we keep stating, there is no doubt we are close to an official unveiling of the OnePlus 3 from OnePlus, and the latest happenings only strengthen that assumption. It appears that the OnePlus 3 has gone through TENAA equipment certification overseas, which many companies must go through to ensure their products are okayed to launch to the masses.

During its pit stop, TENAA confirmed that the device will feature a 5.5? FHD AMOLED display, 4GB of RAM, 3,000mAh battery, Android 6.0.1, as well as GSM, CDMA 2000, and LTE radios. Dimensions of 152.6 × 74.6 × 7.3mm were also confirmed.

Most importantly, TENAA provided high-quality photos of the device, as shown below. As I joked previously, the OnePlus 3 looks like the love child of a HTC One device and an iPhone, thanks to the plastic bands and centered camera on back, with the metallic-ringed fingerprint reader on front. Don’t get me wrong, this device looks pretty solid and we look forward to its launch.

You can only write up rumored specs and leaked photos so much before things begin to dull, so unless OnePlus decides to finally announce this device, we will probably cool it on posting OnePlus 3 news. Just announce it already, OP!

OnePlus 3 Launch Will Take Place in VR Grab Your Free Headset Now!

OnePlus is gearing up to announce their new phone, the OnePlus 3. In doing so, they are once again going to stream the launch event in VR, just as they did last year, only this time they are “upping the ante.” Instead of handing out free Cardboard units to bring you all the VR experience, they are going all out with Gear VR-like headsets made in partnership with AntVR.

They are calling this the Loop VR Headset, because it will help them host a launch event that OnePlus says takes place in the future, at their space headquarters called “The Loop.” As you can see from the image above, this is a full-blown plastic headset that straps to your head while holding your phone.

At this time, we do not know when the OnePlus 3 will be unveiled, but if OnePlus is announcing this new VR launch today, it could be very soon. Last year, they announced the VR launch in late June and then announced the phone in late July. Are we a month away from the OnePlus 3?

As for the VR headsets, OnePlus is once again giving 30,000 of them away. You are reading that correctly. OnePlus said they are “upping the ante” and certainly seems to be doing that by giving away these new Loop VR Headsets that most definitely cost more than cardboard to assemble. OnePlus Will Let You Review the OnePlus 3 Early

To kick off the week with a Monday announcement, a Monday that just so happened to be a pretty major holiday here in the US and is not exactly a great day to announce anything that might be headed this way, OnePlus unveiled a program for the upcoming OnePlus 3 that could land you one ahead of time, for review. The program is called “The Lab,” and it works as a “peer review” program that involves 30 of OnePlus’ biggest fans reviewing the OnePlus 3 to deliver a “comprehensive community review.”

How do you get signed up? Well, you get to apply, not just sign-up. OnePlus wants anyone who is a fan of OnePlus to apply and sell themselves on why they would be the perfect candidate for early review. You have 500 words to do so, but if you have reviewed other products in the past, linking to those reviews could and probably will be beneficial.

OnePlus says they are doing this because the community built OnePlus and they want to give back and blah blah. It’s the same story all small companies pitch to their biggest fans, which is fine. I’m just not sure I fully understand the point of a “comprehensive community review” from the biggest OnePlus fans, a group that isn’t exactly going to go into a review unbiased and open to criticizing the product in front of them from the company they already love. But hey, marketing!

As of right now, over 8,500 people are on the list and OnePlus plans to choose 30.

As we near the apparent unveiling of the OnePlus 3 from OnePlus, additional details are hitting the web, this time from Evan Blass. According to Blass, the OnePlus 3 specs will include a Qualcomm-made Snapdragon 820 processor, 5.5-inch 1080p (FHD) display, 64GB of onboard storage, 16 megapixel rear-facing camera, as well as NFC. Yes, you read that correctly — NFC! The aforementioned specifications align perfectly with what we have reported previously.

From the previous roundup of rumors, there may still be two OnePlus 3 models featuring varying amounts of RAM and onboard storage. The more premium model would feature 6GB of RAM, while the lesser model would have just 4GB. Not that 4GB of RAM is scoff-worthy by any means. It is also reported that the phone will feature a USB Type-C port, same as the OnePlus 2.

We still do not have a confirmed unveiling or launch date for the OnePlus 3, but the company recently hyped up a brand new virtual reality headset, leading many to believe the launch will take place in VR.

We’ll keep you posted on anymore details, but in the meantime, be stoked about the possibility of NFC and mobile payments.

OnePlus Drops Pricing for OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X by 50

Dropping a few phones in price to likely make way for incoming OnePlus 3 inventory, OnePlus has the OnePlus X, OnePlus 2, and if you can find it, the OnePlus One on sale via its online store.

Once priced at $349, the OnePlus 2 is now marked at $299. The OnePlus X, launched at $249, is priced now at $199. I’m assuming you see a trend, as every phone currently available on the OnePlus website has been lowered by $50.

Thanks to Evan Blass, this is likely our first good look at the upcoming OnePlus 3 from OnePlus. As you will see, the phone appears to be the perfect blending of a One M9 from HTC and an iPhone from Apple. It’s not that this is a bad thing, or that we’re calling OnePlus out, it’s just happens to be the best way to describe what the phone looks like, in our opinion.

According to Evan, at least one of the specs we reported on yesterday in our rumor roundup is correct, which is the AMOLED display. The only other spec listed by Evan is a 3,000mAh battery, which does not align with the previously reported 3,500mAh battery size. Other specs we are expecting, thanks to previous leaks, are a Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB and 6GB RAM models, 16MP rear-facing camera, and Android 6.0.1.

Looking over this render, I would say that the OnePlus 3 looks pretty good. On the lefthand side, we have the notification toggle, just as it is on the OnePlus 2. There is a front-facing fingerprint reader, volume rocker on the left side, power button on the right side, USB Type-C, single bottom-facing speaker, and 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom of the phone.

We still don’t have a date from OnePlus for when to expect a launch, but we’re getting close.
